Patience and the new Roman Missal

Editor’s Note: The following is first in a three-part series on the new Roman Missal.

Patience.  St. Paul teaches that “love is patient, love is kind” (1 Cor 13:4).  As we make final preparations for the introduction of the new Roman Missal in a few weeks, I would like to reflect on the Lord’s gift of the virtues.  First, how do we patiently prepare for changes in the Holy Mass?  How can we be patiently loving, and lovingly patient?
We ask the Lord that we be patient with the Catholic Church.  The sacred liturgy was entrusted to the Church by Jesus.  The Church has safeguarded, encouraged, and prayed these holy rites for 2,000 years.  We, and Jesus, love the Church, and we ask our Gentle Jesus that He give us the grace to be patient with the Church in this time of change of how we celebrate the Eucharist.
We ask the Lord that we be patient with the ministers of Holy Mass.  We priests will be challenged with new wording of many of the prayers, some of which we have memorized by decades of use.  The musicians have been working mightily to prepare for new wording and Mass settings.  We ask our Loving Jesus to give us patience with our ministers.
We ask the Lord that we be patient with ourselves.  I know I will make many mistakes in this new wording.  Yet, the Lord is not calling me to perfectionism, but to faithfulness.  The Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives, the most important thing we do.  We ask Christ our King to give us patience with ourselves in this time of change, that we pray the Holy Mass with our whole heart, mind, and soul.  Jesus will help us: He loves us more than we can ask or imagine!

Paciencia y el nuevo Misal Romano

Paciencia.  San Pablo enseña que “el amor es paciente y muestra comprensión” (1 Corintios 13:4). Mientras hacemos los preparativos finales para la introducción del nuevo Misal Romano en unas cuantas semanas, me gustaría reflexionar sobre el regalo del Señor de las virtudes.  Primero, ¿cómo nos preparamos pacientemente para los cambios en la Santa Misa?  ¿Cómo podemos ser amorosos pacientemente y amorosamente pacientes?  
Le pedimos al Señor que seamos pacientes con la Iglesia Católica.  La sagrada liturgia fue confiada a la Iglesia por Jesús.  La Iglesia ha guardado, ha animado y ha orado estos ritos santos por 2,000 años.  Nosotros, y Jesús, amamos a la Iglesia y le pedimos a nuestro tierno Jesús que Él nos dé la gracia para ser pacientes con la Iglesia en este tiempo de cambio de cómo celebramos la Eucaristía.
Le pedimos al Señor que seamos pacientes con los ministros de la Santa Misa.  Los sacerdotes serán desafiados con las palabras nuevas de las muchas oraciones, muchas de ellas ya memorizadas después de décadas de uso.  Los músicos han estado trabajando con todas sus fuerzas para prepararse para las palabras nuevas y arreglos de la Misa.  Le pedimos a nuestro amoroso Jesús que nos dé paciencia con nuestros ministros.
Le pedimos al Señor que seamos pacientes con nosotros mismos.   Yo sé haré muchos errores con estas palabras nuevas.  Sin embargo, el Señor no me está llamando a ser perfecto, sino a ser fiel.  La Eucaristía es la fuente y la cima de nuestras vidas, lo más importante que hacemos.  Le pedimos a Cristo nuestro Rey que nos dé paciencia con nosotros mismos en este tiempo de cambio, que oremos la Santa Misa con todo nuestro corazón, nuestra mente y nuestra alma.  ¡Jesús nos ayudará: Él nos ama más de lo que podamos pedir o imaginar!
