Who are the

seminarians

for the Diocese

of Dodge City?

Pictured at right is Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore and Msgr. Brian Moore with seminarians Don Bedore, Andrew Soukup, Jesse Bergkamp and Juan Salas.

In August, seminarians currently studying for the priesthood for the Diocese of Dodge City met for prayer at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, then at Bishop Ronald Gilmore’s residence where they enjoyed lunch with the bishop, Msgr. Brian Moore, director of seminarians, and Sister Veronice Born.
Seminarians currently studying for the priesthood for the Diocese of Dodge City are: Donald Bedore, third year theology, Mount St. Mary’s Seminary; Jesse Bergkamp, first year theology, Mount St. Mary’s Seminary; Andrew Soukup, first year theology, Mount St. Mary’s Seminary; and Juan Salas, Language, Culture, and Church Program, Conception Seminary.

Bedore, who was born in Stockton, said that one of the joys of attending seminary “has been the opportunity to meet and become friends with many young men from all over the world, from many backgrounds but on same mission: discerning God’s will for their lives.  They love Jesus and they want to do as Jesus would have them to do: maybe to be a priest, maybe not.
“Another joy,” he added, “is the good human and spiritual formation available here.  I appreciate having a regular spiritual director and formation adviser to help me grow spiritually and to become a better person all around.  Also, seminary can be a fun place to be.  The guys like to have fun; they are normal, healthy, and fun people.”
When asked to describe one of the challenges he has faced in attending seminary, he replied, “Being so far from home. It’s a temporary situation and northern Maryland is a beautiful area, especially in the fall.  Also, we stay pretty busy.  Getting cards, letters, and emails from people in Kansas helps a great deal.
“Another challenge,” he said, “is the variety of experiences that we have in our classes, assignments in local parishes and schools, and being involved in events on both a local and national scale.  There is never a dull moment.  Everything considered, it has been the best experience of my life.”
Soukup was born in Great Bend and reared in Lakin. Bergkamp grew up on a farm northwest of Wichita near Ost, while Salas was raised in Villa  Garcia, Mexico in the state of Aguascalientes.
