Attorney William Trenkle honored
by the ‘Best Lawyers of America’
Attorney William P. Trenkle Jr., former primary attorney for the Diocese of Dodge City, was recently honored by the Best Lawyers of America as one of only 24 preeminent lawyers in Kansas who have been listed in Best Lawyers since its first publication 25 years ago.
Trenkle practiced law in Dodge City for 33 years before relocating to Overland Park.
“My wife, Marlene, was the school librarian at Sacred Heart for most of those years,” Trenkle said. “We had two children who went through Sacred Heart.”
Trenkle was honored by his fellow attorneys at the Best Lawyers in America “25th Anniversary Event” in Atlanta April 23.
“In 1983, two lawyers from Harvard decided to put together a small book for non-lawyers listing who they thought were good lawyers in each state in several areas of the law,” Trenkle explained. “It was an honor to be picked at that time. Over time the book was republished and they polled other lawyers in the area to see who should be listed.”
As time passed, he said, it became more and more prestigious to be listed.
“It was really an honor to have your fellow lawyers, many of whom were competitors, endorse me for listing in the book for 25 years.”
During his more then three decades in the Diocese of Dodge City, Trenkle was very active in the community and in the cathedral parish, including serving as DDP chair one year and as one of the chairs of the cathedral building campaign.
A member of the Knights of Columbus, Trenkle served as fundraising chairman for the diocese and as Chairman of the Board for St. Mary of the Plains College. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Newman University of Wichita.
“When I move to Overland Park I maintained my office and firm in Dodge City and we added Tamara Davis as my co-counsel for the diocese,” Trenkle said. “That has continued for the past six years or so. Tammi is now the primary attorney for the diocese and does the bulk of day to day work and my work is limited to general policy matters and special projects.”
Trenkle, a Partner with Foulston Siefkin LLP, practices as a general business lawyer with an emphasis in taxation. The businesses that he represents range from large agri-business enterprises to a multi-state retailer. This representation includes commercial transactions, entity formation, tax planning, estate planning and succession planning.
Among his many memberships, affiliations and honors, Trenkle enjoys Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory’s highest “AV” rating for lawyers and is listed in Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyers and Chambers USA as a leading corporate attorney in the United States.
He is the author of “Tax Notes” for the Kansas Bar Journal, and is a frequent speaker on taxation, estate planning and business topics for more than 100 institutes and events.
He is a former president of the Dodge City Chamber of Commerce and the Ford County Development Corporation.
