October Monthly Notes

CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF DODGE CITY
Monthly Notes from Bishop Gilmore
and the Diocesan Staff
 October 2009 --- Vol. 7, No. 7
From Bishop Gilmore:

►Bishop Gilmore continues to appreciate the prayerful support of the priests, deacons, sisters, and lay people of the diocese.  Bishop’s time at Guest House, he says, continues to be a blessing for him.

► Five Protecting God’s Children Awareness Sessions are currently scheduled through November.  Four in English and one in Spanish.  Please ensure a safe environment for the children and youth of your parish.  Please see to it that all those who deal with children and youth have a background check and participate in an Awareness Session.  For more information, http://www.dcdiocese.org/safe-environment.  As part of our Diocesan-Parish Stewardship Partnership, there is no fee for Awareness sessions.

►Deacons will gather for the Workshop with Father Charles Dahm, OP, on preaching and domestic violence, Saturday, October 3rd, 9am-3pm, Chancery.

►Priests will gather October 6th for a Workshop with Father Dahm, OP, on domestic violence and a pastoral response, 10am – 12:30pm.  After lunch Father Frank Coady, Director of Liturgy and Formation for the Salina Diocese, will present “Sacrifice and the Mass”.  In addition there will be brief presentations of Marriage Enrichment.  The day will end at 4pm.  Sessions are at the Cathedral.  Please RSVP for lunch to Peggy Schulte, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by September 30th.

►Annual Priests Appreciation Dinner will again be hosted by the Dodge City Knights of Columbus at the Dodge City K of C Club Room, October 6th.  Social hour begins at 4:30pm; dinner at 5:30pm.  Please RSVP for dinner to Peggy Schulte, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by September 30th.

►The two-hour workshop presented by Sister Janice Grochowsky, Chancellor, for pastors and others who have been given the responsibility of maintaining sacramental registers and creating sacramental certificates has been very well received.  Areas explored include general principles, specific norms for baptism, marriage and death registers, issues of confidentiality, creating sacramental certificates, making changes to entries in records, and the specific issue of recording adoption in the baptism register.

Two workshops have been scheduled in each deanery...a morning option and an evening option.  The workshops in the Great Bend and Garden City Deaneries have already taken place.  The Dodge City Deanery workshop is October 8th, 10am to 12 noon or 7pm to 9pm, Saint Andrew Parish Center, Wright.  As part of our Diocesan-Parish Stewardship Partnership, there is no fee but registration is helpful to ensure sufficient handout materials.  You may do this, as well as receive additional information at http://dcdiocese.org/chancellor.

► The Kansas Bishops will meet October 8th in Wichita with representatives of the presbyterates of the four Kansas Dioceses.  Bishop Coakley summarized the gathering this way:

During the Year for Priests we are seeking an opportunity to consider how we might foster deeper communion within each of our presbyterates and throughout our province.  Specifically, we are interested in how we bishops can better support priests in their lives and ministry, and how we might be able to collaborate on a provincial level to foster vocations to the priesthood.

The Presbyteral Council selected Fathers Urban, Felix, and Schawe, with Father Mazouch as an alternate, to represent our Presbyterate.  Father Schawe now has a conflict, so Father Mazouch will be part of our “delegation”.

►The Annual Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for 3:00 pm, Sunday, October 18th, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  Couples celebrating 5, 10, 25, 40, 50, and 50+ years of marriage in 2009 will be honored and will renew their vows at the Sunday Eucharist.  A meal will follow the liturgy at the Holy Family Social Center.  Family and friends of the couples are invited to share in the celebration.  Pastors are asked to obtain the names of couples in their parishes who are observing these specific anniversaries.  Names of couples wishing to celebrate should have already been submitted.  Priests are invited to concelebrate and to join the anniversary couples for dinner.  If you have any questions call Peg at the Chancery @ 620-227-1531.

►Good Leaders Good Shepherds meets next 11am, October 20 to 4pm, October 22, at the Heartland Center in Great Bend.  Participants have received the full schedule and other details via email directly from Catholic Leadership Institute.

►Newman University will hold an event October 17, 6:00—8:00pm, at Hoover Pavilion, Dodge City to raise scholarship funds for our Western Kansas programs.  Watch for more information.

►RCIA Roundtable is Thursday, November 12th, 10am – 3pm.  This is an opportunity for those entrusted with leading/coordinating RCIA in their parishes to meet, to share concerns, ideas, and to plan for RCIA in the diocese.  Please let Coleen Stein know if you are coming so that you can be counted in for lunch, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

►RCIA UPDATES:  Twenty-six people from our diocese participated in the North American Forum on the Catechumenate’s Beginnings Institute in Wichita in September.  We presently have 24 people participating in our Pastoral Ministry Formation class on the period of purification and enlightenment.   RCIA Roundtable is November 12th, 10am at the Chancery.  See note below for Retreats in preparation for Lent.  Future plans include Father Tim Piasecki, who presented the Confirmation Seminar (the Paul Turner Day) in Spanish in August, returning to the diocese to present a workshop in Spanish on RCIA in the Spanish Speaking Community.

►2010 Diocesan RCIA Retreats...Journeys to Conversion, February 6, 2010,   Heartland Center for Spirituality, Great Bend (English only); and February 13, 2010,  Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City (English and Spanish).  Presenters:  Sr. Renee Dreiling, OP, and Jolene Geier, OP (English) and  Sr. Matilde Monterrose MCMI (Spanish).  Register: 620.792.1232 or e-mail:  This email address is being protected from spambots. ►Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Run will be in Garden City, October 29th; Dodge City, October 30th; Great Bend, October 31st, and Pratt, November 1st.  This program began in 1960.  Supreme Knight Carl Anderson says “the running of the rose is a perfect program for the Knights of Columbus.  Through it we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express the unity of the Order, but we affirm the Order’s dedication to the sanctity of human life.  The District Deputy of the locales affected has contacted the priests about scheduling prayer services/mass.

►Annual Scripture Day is November 5th, 10am, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  The topic: “From Saint Paul to you...” (Paul of Tarsus ~ pastor and theologian).  Presenters:  Father Octavio Mondragon (Spanish) and Father Sean Martin (English).  As part of our Diocesan-Parish Stewardship Partnership, there is no fee.  Please register with Peggy Schulte, This email address is being protected from spambots. ►Newman University Service Camp will be June 6-11, 2010.  This past June Newman University and the Diocese collaborated on a pilot “Camp” where high school students from St. John, Hoisington and Prince of Peace, Great Bend along with adult sponsors lived at Newman University and each day worked at different service sites in Wichita.

Pam Vainer, Youth Minister at Prince of Peace, made a DVD of the experience.  You may view it at www.dcdiocese.org.  Pam has plans to share it with youth ministers/DREs.  A number of parishes have already indicated their intention to be part of the experience in June 2010.  The cost is anticipated to be the same as this past June, $100/person.  There needs to be one adult chaperone for every five youth.  To sign up or for more information, please contact Peggy Schulte, 620-227-1531, This email address is being protected from spambots. ►Father Jimmy Barrozo, from the Diocese of Sorsogon, Bicol, Philippines, continues to be snarled up in the immigration morass.  The last word is that we are making process.  We hope to have Father Jimmy with us within this next month. We continue to be appreciative to Father Angel Dy for his willingness to continue far past his scheduled time to return home to Sorsogon until Father Jimmy arrives and gets settled in.   We are also grateful to Bishop Bastes for making allowance for this change of plans.  Let us pray that that Father Jimmy will indeed soon be with us.

►Father Marvin Reif continues at Iroquois Center, Greensburg.  While he appreciates the thoughtfulness expressed by the cards, notes, letters, calls that he has received, he can find these producing additional anxiety.  There were some changes in his treatment modalities that are hoped to provide some relief for Father Marvin.  Let us keep him in our prayer.

►Father Gregory LeBlanc’s address is 110 North Ashley Park, Wichita, KS  67212.  His email address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .  His cell phone number is still  (620) 388-4651.  He has been providing chaplaincy services to the Carmelite Nuns, as well as offering other substitute services in Wichita.

►Deacon Erasmo and Olga Rodriguez will be retiring and moving to Lubbock Texas, October 21st.  Erasmo was ordained to the Diaconate on December 18, 1983.  He was among the first of the Permanent Deacons ordained for service in our Diocese.  He has served in numerous capacities, Spiritual Director for Cursillo; Pastoral Associate at Cathedral; Deacon at St. Anthony, Liberal; member of the Pastoral Team in Elkhart, Hugoton, and Satanta; Vicar for Hispanic Affairs; and staff member of the Office for Migration, Elkhart.  Once, when asked why he decided to become a deacon, Deacon Erasmo said all I did was be open to the Holy Spirit and follow what the Spirit put in my heart.  May Erasmo and Olga enjoy their retirement and be blest with the choicest graces.     If you wish to send a note or card, Erasmo and Olga’s address is 805 Avenue “J”, Dodge City, KS 67801, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .   The Cathedral and Chancery Staffs are having a farewell luncheon at the Cathedral at noon on October 13th.  If you would wish to join us for that lunch, please let Jodi Lix (620-225-4802, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) know before October 6th.
