►Bishop Gilmore continues to appreciate the prayerful support of the priests, deacons, sisters, and lay people of the diocese. Bishop’s time at Guest House, he says, continues to be a blessing for him.
► Five Protecting God’s Children Awareness Sessions are currently scheduled through November. Four in English and one in Spanish. Please ensure a safe environment for the children and youth of your parish. Please see to it that all those who deal with children and youth have a background check and participate in an Awareness Session. For more information, http://www.dcdiocese.org/safe-environment. As part of our Diocesan-Parish Stewardship Partnership, there is no fee for Awareness sessions.
►Deacons will gather for the Workshop with Father Charles Dahm, OP, on preaching and domestic violence, Saturday, October 3rd, 9am-3pm, Chancery.
►The two-hour workshop presented by Sister Janice Grochowsky, Chancellor, for pastors and others who have been given the responsibility of maintaining sacramental registers and creating sacramental certificates has been very well received. Areas explored include general principles, specific norms for baptism, marriage and death registers, issues of confidentiality, creating sacramental certificates, making changes to entries in records, and the specific issue of recording adoption in the baptism register.
Two workshops have been scheduled in each deanery...a morning option and an evening option. The workshops in the Great Bend and Garden City Deaneries have already taken place. The Dodge City Deanery workshop is October 8th, 10am to 12 noon or 7pm to 9pm, Saint Andrew Parish Center, Wright. As part of our Diocesan-Parish Stewardship Partnership, there is no fee but registration is helpful to ensure sufficient handout materials. You may do this, as well as receive additional information at http://dcdiocese.org/chancellor.
► The Kansas Bishops will meet October 8th in Wichita with representatives of the presbyterates of the four Kansas Dioceses. Bishop Coakley summarized the gathering this way:
During the Year for Priests we are seeking an opportunity to consider how we might foster deeper communion within each of our presbyterates and throughout our province. Specifically, we are interested in how we bishops can better support priests in their lives and ministry, and how we might be able to collaborate on a provincial level to foster vocations to the priesthood.
The Presbyteral Council selected Fathers Urban, Felix, and Schawe, with Father Mazouch as an alternate, to represent our Presbyterate. Father Schawe now has a conflict, so Father Mazouch will be part of our “delegation”.
►The Annual Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for 3:00 pm, Sunday, October 18th, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Couples celebrating 5, 10, 25, 40, 50, and 50+ years of marriage in 2009 will be honored and will renew their vows at the Sunday Eucharist. A meal will follow the liturgy at the Holy Family Social Center. Family and friends of the couples are invited to share in the celebration. Pastors are asked to obtain the names of couples in their parishes who are observing these specific anniversaries. Names of couples wishing to celebrate should have already been submitted. Priests are invited to concelebrate and to join the anniversary couples for dinner. If you have any questions call Peg at the Chancery @ 620-227-1531.
►Good Leaders Good Shepherds meets next 11am, October 20 to 4pm, October 22, at the Heartland Center in Great Bend. Participants have received the full schedule and other details via email directly from Catholic Leadership Institute.
►Newman University will hold an event October 17, 6:00—8:00pm, at Hoover Pavilion, Dodge City to raise scholarship funds for our Western Kansas programs. Watch for more information.
►RCIA UPDATES: Twenty-six people from our diocese participated in the North American Forum on the Catechumenate’s Beginnings Institute in Wichita in September. We presently have 24 people participating in our Pastoral Ministry Formation class on the period of purification and enlightenment. RCIA Roundtable is November 12th, 10am at the Chancery. See note below for Retreats in preparation for Lent. Future plans include Father Tim Piasecki, who presented the Confirmation Seminar (the Paul Turner Day) in Spanish in August, returning to the diocese to present a workshop in Spanish on RCIA in the Spanish Speaking Community.
►La fiesta diocesana de Nuestra Señora la Virgen de Guadalupe is set for Saturday, December 5th with a 7:30pm Mass at the Cathedral. More information will be coming.
►Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th, is a holy day of obligation.
►First Semester Catechist Formation, “God in a World of Violence, Part I” received very good evaluations. Please remember that the second semester sessions (God in a World of Violence, Part II) are January 13, 6pm (English), January 16, 9am (English), January 17, 3pm (Spanish). All sessions are over our ITV network. Additional information and materials from the September sessions are available at http://dcdiocese.org/catechist-formation. As part of our Diocesan-Parish Partnership in Stewardship, there is no fee for Catechist Formation.
►Newman University Service Camp will be June 6-11, 2010. This past June Newman University and the Diocese collaborated on a pilot “Camp” where high school students from St. John, Hoisington and Prince of Peace, Great Bend along with adult sponsors lived at Newman University and each day worked at different service sites in Wichita.
►Father Jimmy Barrozo, from the Diocese of Sorsogon, Bicol, Philippines, continues to be snarled up in the immigration morass. The last word is that we are making process. We hope to have Father Jimmy with us within this next month. We continue to be appreciative to Father Angel Dy for his willingness to continue far past his scheduled time to return home to Sorsogon until Father Jimmy arrives and gets settled in. We are also grateful to Bishop Bastes for making allowance for this change of plans. Let us pray that that Father Jimmy will indeed soon be with us.
►Father Marvin Reif continues at Iroquois Center, Greensburg. While he appreciates the thoughtfulness expressed by the cards, notes, letters, calls that he has received, he can find these producing additional anxiety. There were some changes in his treatment modalities that are hoped to provide some relief for Father Marvin. Let us keep him in our prayer.

►Safe Environment: I am overwhelmed by the numbers of persons taking advantage of the Protecting God’s Children awareness training session. Hundreds of adults have attended the eight sessions that have been held since August; another five have been scheduled throughout the diocese thru November. We owe a debt of gratitude to our facilitators who truly see their work in helping to protect children as a ministry. Thank you, Marta and Oscar Rodriguez, Sharon Stuart, Cherry Deges, Donna Staab & Norma Alvarez.
