November Monthly Notes

CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF DODGE CITY
Monthly Notes from Bishop Gilmore
and the Diocesan Staff
November 2009 --- Vol. 7, No. 8
From Bishop Gilmore:

I have so appreciated the support that I have received from so many people since I left to spend this much-needed time at Guest House in Rochester, Minnesota.   I look forward to my return home.  My present plans are for me to be home by Thanksgiving.

I have been apprised of a number of recent events in the diocese:

October 2-6

I am grateful to the Deacons who gathered with Father Chuck Dahm for a preaching seminar.

I have been greatly encouraged by how well Father Dahm’s message regarding domestic violence was received through his preaching at the weekend Masses at the Cathedral, his seminar for local professionals, his evening workshops, and his presentation to the priests.

I am further encouraged that it looks as if we have plans underway for Father Dahm to return to the Diocese next October to similar presentations in Prince of Peace Parish, Great Bend.

November 5th

I have heard that there was an overwhelming positive response to our annual Scripture Day.  Over 150 people participated.  From comments garnered at the conclusion of the day, Fathers Martin and Mondragon did masterful jobs that were most appreciated. I thank Father John Strasser and Sister Maria Rea for arranging for the speakers.  I appreciate the Chancery and Cathedral staff for helping with all the details of the day.

It is very good news that Father Jimmy Barrozo will arrive in the Diocese Sunday, November 15th.  Father Barrozo is a priest of the Diocese of Sorsogon who is coming to serve for three years in our Diocese as part of our agreement between the Diocese of Dodge City and the Diocese of Sorsogon.  With Father Jimmy’s long awaited arrival, we will be bidding farewell to Monsignor Angel Dy who will be returning to Sorsogon on December 4th.  Please extend a warm welcome to Father Jimmy when you meet him.  Please join me in expressing our sincere thanks, safe travel, and prayerful best wishes to Monsignor Dy.

Father Barrozo will be named Parochial Administrator of St. Anthony, Fowler; St. John the Baptist, Meade; and St. Patrick, Plains with the departure of Monsignor Dy.

Please take note of the following:

RCIA Roundtable is Thursday, November 12th, 10am – 3pm.  This is an opportunity for those entrusted with leading/coordinating RCIA in their parishes to meet, to share concerns, ideas, and to plan for RCIA in the diocese.  Please let Coleen Stein know if you are coming so that you can be counted in for lunch, This email address is being protected from spambots. La fiesta diocesana de Nuestra Señora la Virgen de Guadalupe is set for Saturday, December 5th with a 7:30pm Mass at the Cathedral.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th, is a holy day of obligation.

First Semester Catechist Formation, “God in a World of Violence, Part I” received very good evaluations. Please remember that the second semester sessions (God in a World of Violence, Part II) are January 13, 6pm (English), January 16, 9am (English), January 17, 3pm (Spanish).  All sessions are over our ITV network.  Additional information and materials from the September sessions are available at http://dcdiocese.org/catechist-formation.  As part of our Diocesan-Parish Partnership in Stewardship, there is no fee for Catechist Formation.

Newman University Service Camp will be June 6-11, 2010.  This past June Newman University and the Diocese collaborated on a pilot “Camp” where high school students from St. John, Hoisington and Prince of Peace, Great Bend along with adult sponsors lived at Newman University and each day worked at different service sites in Wichita.

Pam Vainer, Youth Minister at Prince of Peace, made a DVD of the experience.  You may view it at www.dcdiocese.org.  Pam has plans to share it with youth ministers/DREs.  A number of parishes have already indicated their intention to be part of the experience in June 2010.  The cost is anticipated to be the same as this past June, $100/person.  There needs to be one adult chaperone for every five youth.  To sign up or for more information, please contact Peggy Schulte, 620-227-1531, This email address is being protected from spambots. Clergy updates include…

Father Lisle Pottorff will be moving temporarily to “B-2” at the Priest Retirement Center in Wichita.  This move is for the time it takes for his “pod” to be renovated.  His phone number and mailing address remain the same.

Father Frank Jordan, by the grace of God, walked away from a very bad car accident.  Neither he nor the driver of the other vehicle was injured.  Frank’s car was totaled.  I continue to pray for safe travel for all of our priests.

Father Marvin Reif has experienced some set backs.  This has necessitated some changes in his treatment modalities with the possibilities of even more changes.  Father Marvin is again finding it difficult to respond to calls and mail.  If you wish to send mail to Father Marvin, please address it to him in care of the Chancery (PO Box 137, Dodge City, KS 67801).

Deacon Erasmo and Olga Rodriguez have moved to Lubbock Texas:  4501 52nd Street, Lubbock, TX 79414.  Their phone number is 806-797-1757

Father Gregory LeBlanc’s address is 110 North Ashley Park, Wichita, KS  67212.  His email address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .  His cell phone number is still (620) 388-4651.  He has been providing chaplaincy services to the Carmelite Nuns, as well as offering other substitute services in Wichita.

From Sr. Janice Grochowsky, CSJ, JCL, Chancellor:

For those of you who often need to request sacramental records from churches in Mexico, here is a link http://www.oficinaparroquial.com/directorio/ to a website containing contact information for the parishes and dioceses in Mexico.  A reminder that a recent copy of a baptism certificate—with notations—is a required document to be included with the prenuptial file and for annulment petitions.  With this website, it should be much easier for you to obtain these certificates.

A huge thanks to everyone who turned in their Official Catholic Directory pages… we had 100% rate of return this year!!

Prenuptial documents – A reminder to send these to me at least a month before the wedding.  This one-month cushion came in handy just recently when the pastor did mail the prenup forms for two weddings well before the wedding dates.  Unfortunately, the envelope with the forms was sitting at the Dodge City Post Office for more than a month because of an inadequate amount of postage.  Fortunately, by the time the envelope made it to me there was still a couple of weeks before the dates of the weddings…so all turned out okay.  So, please be sure you put adequate amount of postage on all mailings and please send them at least a month before the date of the wedding.
