►Again, I express my gratitude to all who have encouraged me and supported me during my time in treatment at Guest House. I am grateful to my diocesan staff for their extra efforts during my absence from the diocese. It is so good to be back home. I continue to be humbled by and grateful for all the blessings that recovery brings to me, not the least of which is the welcome home that I have received. You all continue in my prayers of gratitude during this season of expectation. May we all know renewed and deepened peace in the Christmas season that is fast coming upon us.
►Since Pope Paul VI in 1968, Catholics have been asked by our Holy Father to begin the New Year in prayer for peace. Sister Janice Grochowsky, our chancellor, has for the past several years crafted a Holy Hour for Peace. I am happy to offer her effort for this year and to recommend it to you for possible use in your parish or other venue of your choice. You may find it on our home page (www.dcdiocese.org).
►Speaking of peace, remember Catechist Formation this year has as its theme: Seeking God in a World of Violence: Wednesday, January 13 - 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (English); Saturday, January 16 - 9:00 a.m to 12:00 noon (English); and Sunday, January 17 - 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Spanish). All presentations are by Sister Esther Pineda, CSJ. For more information visit: http://www.dcdiocese.org/catechist-formation
►Priests are asked to return their Annual Personnel to Father Ted Skalsky. We are still missing a number. These surveys are of considerable help in my deliberations with the Personnel Board.
►Here is a compilation of alternatives to embryonic stem cell research, highlighting key advances occurring in the month of November 2009. Please click here.
►“Believe, Celebrate, Live the Eucharist” is a one-hour Pastoral Ministry Formation Class that will be presented Wednesday evenings, 6-9pm, January 20 & 27 and February 3 & 10 over ITV by Fathers Coady, Schremmer, and Strasser. One of its focuses will be consideration of the new translation of the Roman Missal that will be in use in a couple of years. This is one of our preliminary attempts at offering the necessary catechesis as we move to make these changes in the words we use to pray the Mass. Other efforts for priests and people are in the planning stages. For more information on this class, please visit http://www.dcdiocese.org/pastoral-ministry-formation.
►With Christmas not even upon us, it seems awkward to ask that you begin thinking about Lent. I do ask that you consider, even now, accepting my annual invitation to make Word Working a part of your and your parish’s Lent. Word Working is our form of Lectio Divina. Our Holy Father and the Synod on the Word emphasize the blessing Lectio Divina has been, is and can be for the Church.
Word Working is not bible study. It is a disciplined form of prayer. Word Working is not a discussion group. It is a time of prayer with others. Word Working is not where we break open the Word. It is where the Word works on us and perhaps even breaks us open to God’s grace. We are not in the driver’s seat. The Word that is living and effective is leading the prayer. We are not directing the discussion. The Word that can judge the intentions of and thoughts of the heart is leading us in prayer. There is nothing wrong with bible study and discussion groups. Word Working can be the prayer that leads into or out of such study or discussion. But Word Working allows for something that study and discussion alone can not. It is that unique grace that does as Benedict XIV says will truly lead to a new springtime in the Church.
In our diocese, Lenten Word Working also allows us to be united with the elect as they journey through Lent which the Church gives them and us as a gift to prepare for Easter. Together as a diocese as we focus on the Scrutiny Gospels, whether we have elect in our parish or not, we are being Catholic. We are part of the universal Church preparing for Easter new life.
More information about this upcoming Lent and Word Working will be forthcoming shortly after the New Year. +Ronald M. Gilmore EVENTS
►Sister Nancy Jane Kuntz, OP, Pastoral Associate in Barber County, is on a health leave. Around Thanksgiving time, Sister experienced what might have been a slight stroke. While tests are inconclusive, the experience has left her a little weakened. Sister is recuperating at the Dominican Motherhouse in Great Bend. She says that she is improving but on medical advice will continue a while longer at the Motherhouse. Let us keep Sister Nancy Jane in our prayer.
►Sister Andre Kravec, OP, is doing well in her recuperation from heart surgery after Thanksgiving. She is recuperating in the Motherhouse in Ohio and hopes to be back in Immaculate Conception Parish, Claflin, as Pastoral Minister, in January. Let us keep Sister Andre in our prayer.

►NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK IS JANUARY 10-16.
The Baptism of the Lord marks the beginning of National Vocation Awareness Week. This year’s theme is Baptized in the Spirit. As we celebrate this feast, we recall our own baptism and renew our baptismal commitment.
This week also reminds us that it is our responsibility to pray for vocations and to invite young people to consider a call to ordained ministry and consecrated life.
Promotion of vocations to priesthood and religious life is one of the five priorities of the U. S. bishops. For lesson plans for grades K-8 visit the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops at http://www.usccb.org/vocations
Bulletin announcements for National Vocation Awareness Week are provided in the Bulletin Corner.
►CELEBRATING THE YEAR FOR PRIESTS
In November, St. Dominic Parish held an event for all parishioners and their families. The event began with a coffee and dessert bar, followed by the video Fishers of Men and a presentation by the Coordinator of Vocations on how to encourage vocations. If your parish would like to do something similar, please give me a call at 620-227-1530!
I received an email from a parishioner saying that three generations of men attended the event and enjoyed the program. What a hopeful sign…a son, a father, and a grandfather spending an evening together to learn more about the vocation of priesthood.
Thank you St. Dominic for the wonderful event!
