June 2010 Monthly Notes

CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF DODGE CITY
Monthly Notes from Bishop Gilmore
and the Diocesan Staff
June 2010 --- Vol. VIII, No. 5
From Bishop Gilmore:

Deacon Don Bedore’s ordination was a moving experience.  To see his family so moved by Don’s willingness to give himself in service to God’s people was a true grace for all who participated.  I thank all who prepared for the celebration and all who came to participate.

Let us continue to support Don with our prayer as he spends the summer in St. Anthony Parish, Liberal, and then his last year at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  His ordination to the priesthood will be Saturday, May 28, 2011.

It was an added grace at Don’s ordination to have our seminarians with us.  Juan Salas will be spending the summer in Prince of Peace Parish before returning to Conception Seminary for additional English studies.  Andy Soukup will be studying Spanish in Mexico before returning to Mt. St. Mary’s.  Jesse Bergkamp will be spending the summer at the Cathedral before returning to Mt. St. Mary’s.

I was especially pleased to be able to introduce at the lunch following the ordination our new seminarian,  Jacob Schneider from Olmitz and the possibility of another young man who is in the application process.

Let us keep each of these young men in our prayer.  It is such a blessing to have these men studying for the priesthood for our diocese.

Thanks are extended to all those who participated in our June 1st DRE Day.  I invite you to visit often the “Yellow Notebook”, http://www.dcdiocese.org/yellow-notebook, which will be updated throughout the year.  This is a handy reference and way to easily access considerable resources from our website.

Father Louis Hoang, who has been on loan to the Diocese of Honolulu for these past six plus years so that he could spend time with his family who reside in Hawaii, is returning home to the Diocese of Dodge City.

Fr. Louis will return to the Diocese on July 8th.  He will take up residence in St. Rose Rectory of Prince of Peace Parish, Great Bend.  I have appointed him to provide chaplaincy services for the Dominican Sisters of Peace at their Great Bend Motherhouse and to provide assistance to Father Charles Mazouch in his pastoral care in Immaculate Conception Parish, Claflin, and to Sister Andre Kravec with sacramental ministry in Holy Family Parish, Odin.

I know a warm welcome awaits Fr. Louis as he returns home.

Prepare and Enrich training for priests has been set for July 6th, 10:30am to 4:30pm, at the Cathedral.  The fee is $125.00/participant.  The fee includes the cost of the program including a kit with a wealth of resource materials.  Please register by June 23rd with Amy Seachris, 620-227-1500, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .  Checks may be sent to her attention as well.  Please make them out to the Diocese of Dodge City.

August 5th is the second training session open to priests, deacons, Parish Life Coordinators, and other parish ministers.  Please register with Amy by July 21st.

Questions, please visit with Fathers Mazouch, Urban, or Skalsky.

It has been suggested that it is good preparation to have played with the instrument by taking it with your self (perhaps making up an imaginary friend).  If you are interested in doing so, please email Fr. Bob, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and he will arrange for you to able to do that.

Our annual KARE conference, July 23rd - 25th, warrants your support and encouragement.  Please visit our home page and click on the KARE Conference “badge”.

Our annual Stewardship Day is August 28th.  Please encourage your people to participate.

Why RCIA? is a workshop presented in English on Saturday, September 18th in Scott City and in Spanish on Sunday, September 19th in Liberal.

I appreciate that the participants at our most recent RCIA Roundtable are willing to visit with priests, parish leaders, and others in parishes to encourage participation in this latest effort to support and enrich our RCIA ministry within the diocese.

With the new millennium, the U.S. bishops took a close look at how well the RCIA is working in our local parishes. The bishops found that in some parishes the RCIA is working very well, yet in other parishes it doesn’t even exist. In their report, the bishops stressed that the RCIA is renewing the life of the Church in the United States and must be a priority in our parishes.

Why do our bishops want the RCIA to be a priority in our parishes when there is so much else going on in parish life? How does it renew a parish? And what’s it got to do with each of us? Why RCIA? will address these questions about RCIA and give a step-by-step explanation of the Rite.

I am grateful for those many people in our diocese who give their time, talent, and yes, treasure so that through RCIA we may make new disciples and renew the old, faithful ones. It is out of this gratitude that I offer Why RCIA?.  I pray that it will be an enriching experience for the RCIA veterans and an inviting experience for those new or unfamiliar with the RCIA.

When we commit ourselves, our energy and our resources to the RCIA, we commit our parishes to continuing the mission of Jesus in the Church and in the world.

We are in the process of making plans for the implementation of the Roman Missal, the third edition with the new translation. For example our Catechist Formation sessions in the winter of 2010 and the fall of 2011 will have this as their focus.  Our priests’ day focusing on the implementation is October 5th.  As our plans develop, I will share them with you.  In the meantime, you might want to consider this resource: http://www.usccbpublishing.org/productdetails.cfm?PC=1476

From Fr Reggie Urban, Chair, Presbyteral Council:

Click here to view the Presbyteral Council Notes of May 25, 2010.

At the recommendation of the Presbyteral Council we are just about to launch a new marriage preparation instrument called Prepare and Enrich. All the priests of our diocese will soon be trained to facilitate this wonderful online instrument. Couples will later be trained to collaborate with priests to "mentor" engaged couples. You can check out the instrument at Prepare-Enrich.com.

Welcome to Father Floyd McKinney who was just elected to replace Father Chuck Mazouch in August. Diocesan and presbyteral thanks goes to Father Chuck who has served on the Council for 10 of the last 11 years!

Awakening Vocations, a pilot project facilitated by Mary Sharon Moore at Prince of Peace Parish in Great Bend, is a 4 part experience intended to awaken everyone to God's calling. The Presbyteral Council will be discussing this project at more length at our next meeting with special input from Becky Hessman, Diocesan Coordinator for Vocations, along with Sister Celeste Albers, Pastoral Minister at Prince of Peace, who worked closely with Mary Sharon in conducting the experience.

From Sr. Janice Grochowsky, CSJ, JCL, Chancellor:

NOTICE:  We have been receiving 8 ½ x 11 mailing envelopes from parishes with insufficient funds.  Whenever you send mail in an 8 ½ x 11 envelope, in addition to the postage needed for the weight, you also must place an additional $.44 on it for the size. (For example, an 8 ½ x 11 envelope weighing 3 ounces would cost a total $1.22--$.78 for the weight and $.44 for the size).  We have an account at the Post Office and are supposed to deduct the insufficient funds from our account; however, not everyone at the Post Office must know that because there have been times mail with insufficient funds has been held…sometimes for more than a week.

I will be out of the office the week of June 21-25 and the week of July 5-9.  Please submit prenuptial documents well in advance of the wedding.

From Becky Hessman, Coordinator of Vocations:

Companion Camp, June 18-20, is the next event being held at Conception Seminary College for boys entering 6th- 8th grade. Cost: $100 (covers room, all meals, and T-shirt). Transportation will be provided by the Diocese of Dodge City. For a brochure and more information contact Becky Hessman at 620.227.1530 or This email address is being protected from spambots. ForYourVocation.org is a new website launched by the USCCB to promote the vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.  The website has a variety of resources for discerners, parents, educators, and youth leaders.  In the fall, a Spanish-language site will be available at www.PorTuVocación.org.

From Eric Haselhorst, Director of Stewardship:

Save the Date! The 2010 Stewardship Conference is Saturday August 28, 2010 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Go to www.dcdiocese.org/stewardship for more information. Posters will be going to parishes soon. Also, feel free to link to the webpage on your parish website.

For those interested in Engaged Encounter, the electronic payment method is working very well and is being used by over half who attend. Do encourage couples to use this hassle free payment method. http://dcdiocese.org/engaged-encounter
