October 2010 Monthly Notes

CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF DODGE CITY
Monthly Notes from Bishop Gilmore
and the Diocesan Staff
October 2010 --- Vol. VIII, No. 9
From Bishop Gilmore:

WHY RCIA? was by all accounts very well received.  60 people participated in the English session, Saturday, September 11th, in Scott City and 60 people participated in the Spanish session, Sunday, September 12th, in Liberal.  My personal thanks to those who participated, encouraged people to participate, hosted the events, and planned the events.

Our special offering for Catholic Social Service as part of our celebration of the national centennial of Catholic Charities USA has been very affirming to our CSS staff and to me.  Thank you.  Please express my personal thanks to your parishioners.  Presently, with responses from 14 parishes have received $18,000.00 for CSS.  In addition to the money received, we are ever so grateful for all those who have indicated their desire to support CSS in prayer, to volunteer, to be informed of CSS’s activities and services.  I know that some parishes had the need to take up the collection on another Sunday.  If you have not already taken up this collection, please do so in the very near future.  Funds collected may be directed to either John Ackerman at the Chancery or to Debbie Snapp, Executive Director of Catholic Social Service, c/o the Chancery Office.  Please forward the offering envelopes as well.  In a future issue of the SKR, we will offer an accounting of funds received from each parish.

The Presbyteral Assembly, Tuesday, October 5th went very well.  I am grateful to the priests who participated.  We had perfect attendance.  Thank you.  Father Coady’s PowerPoint slides may be accessed by clicking on each below.  Our Diocesan Plan to support parishes in their implementation of the English Translation of the 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal may be accessed by clicking here.

Some History
Furthering the Renewal
Theology of Liturgy

Our Annual Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass will be celebrated Sunday, October 17th, 3pm, at the Cathedral.  It appears that we will have around 75 couples celebrating.  All priests are invited to concelebrate this mass.  If you wish to do so, please let Fr. Bob Schremmer ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) know by Thursday, October 14th.

Our Annual Scripture Day is Tuesday, October 19th, at our Cathedral.  Father Sean Martin and Father John Fahey will be presenting the Gospel of Matthew in English and Spanish.  If you have not already registered please do so ASAP:

http://www.dcdiocese.org/dia-anual-de-la-escritura-2010 (in Spanish).

Information regarding Mentor Couples for Prepare and Enrich may be accessed by clicking here.

Called by Name is an initiative from the Vocation Office that takes an old idea and gives it a new spin.  The Called by Name email campaign began the first part of this month.  Emails went out asking all priests, deacons, sisters, Catholic educators and others to submit the names of young men who may make good priests.  We will then send these men invitations to discernment events, as well as other information to discern their vocations.  The response so far has been very good.  I appreciate all those who have sent in names, as well as those who have said that they will continue to think and ponder who the Lord might be calling in their parish/community/family.

Implementation of the English Translation of the 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal will take place the First Sunday of Advent 2011, November 27, 2011.  To prepare for the implementation, a plan of resources and events to support parishes in our diocese has been developed.  Please click here to access the plan.  Please click here to access information for “Lifting Up Our Hearts”.

During our September meeting we were grateful to have Becky Hessman, Vocation Coordinator of the Diocese and Sister Celeste Albers, Pastoral Minister at Prince of Peace Parish, Great Bend share with us special input on Awakening Vocations, a pilot project at Prince of Peace Parish in Great Bend facilitated by Mary Sharon Moore.

Let's be aware and keep on praying for all God-given Vocations.

From Sr. Janice Grochowsky, CSJ, JCL, Chancellor:

Marriage Preparation:  Beginning October 1, the “Instrument” to be used for all marriage preparation is Prepare and Enrich.  Until we revise our prenuptial form, just cross out FOCCUS and write in Prepare and Enrich.

Sacramental Records Workshop:  Tuesday, October 26 from 10 am to noon at the Mary, Queen of Peace Parish Center in Ulysses I will present the workshop “Sacramental Records and Registers.”  Topics to be explored include: general principles regarding sacramental registers, specific information for baptism, marriage and death registers, sacramental notations on baptism certificates, how to record the baptism of an adopted child, confidentiality, making corrections in registers and creating certificates.  This is the same workshop I presented last year.  With one exception, the only persons who notified me of being interested were in the western part of the diocese.  Anyone is welcome to attend, but please contact me so that I will have an adequate number of handouts.  If there are folks in the middle or eastern part of the diocese interested in this workshop, contact me and I will set up a time and place to present the workshop in a convenient location of this area in the diocese.  For more information or to RSVP your attendance, contact me: This email address is being protected from spambots. DREs:  Please submit to me the lists of catechists, regular volunteers and other adults who assist with youth-related activities ASAP.

Pastors:  Please submit to me the blue Official Catholic Directory information sheets by October 15.

From Becky Hessman, Coordinator of Vocations:

The Called by Name email campaign is now taking place. This vocation initiative seeks to identify future priests for our diocese by asking priests, deacons, sisters, educators, and many others to submit the names of young men who may make good priests. Please be thinking about the young men in your life who may be candidates for seminary.

You may submit a name by clicking here.

These men will receive information to discern their vocations and invitations to discernment events.

Encounter With God’s Call at Conception Seminary College is November 13-15. This “come and see” weekend provides men high school juniors and up with the opportunity to spend time with seminarians. Please invite young men who could profit from some first-hand contact with seminary life. This weekend provides them with an opportunity to become part of the community for a few days and experience the human, spiritual, and academic components of priestly discernment and formation.

There is no charge for the weekend and the Diocese of Dodge City will provide transportation.  For further information, registration and transportation, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

From Eric Haselhorst, Director of Stewardship:

Stewardship with Latinos: Koren Ruiz of Omeara Ferguson will be in Dodge City, Garden City, and Liberal October 23 and 24 to present Stewardship as a Way of Life in Spanish. The lectures will be approximately 3 hours long and will be interactive. These events are for all people who speak Spanish in your parishes. Do encourage your parishioners to attend an event close to their home parish. Please contact the parish they will attend so accommodations can be made. A complete schedule can be seen on the stewardship page.

To help Spanish speaking people learn how to navigate personal finance, Andres Gutierrez will be coming to the Dodge City Civic Center November 14th. Andres works for Personal finance expert Dave Ramsey and will teach the same principals as Dave. This event is for all people who speak Spanish in Central and Southwest Kansas, Northwest Oklahoma and Texas and Eastern Colorado.

*Doors open at 1 PM and Andres will begin speaking at 2 PM until 6 PM.
*Tickets are $20 at the door, $15 in advance, and a special group rate of $10 per ticket if 10 or more are purchased.
*This event will not be a boring lecture! Andres will be entertaining as well as very educational. Do encourage people you know to attend.
*I ask all Catholic parishes in the Diocese of Dodge City to purchase tickets at the group rate and be a blessing to your Spanish speaking parishioners as part of your Hispanic Ministry. If you do not have Spanish speakers in your parish, buy a group and give them to an agency that can get them into the hands of those who need or want them. Do place your parish logo on them as a means of evangelizing for your parish.
*For more information, visit the stewardship page or Andres Gutierrez event facebook page.

From Steven Polley, Director of Youth Ministry:

November 6–8 is our next scheduled TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) weekend at St. Dominic’s Parish Center in Garden City.  Please encourage your juniors and seniors to register for this TEC weekend.

Last spring we made the decision to move our high school rally to November 20–21 and the junior high rally to March 27.   Please encourage your high school youth and adult sponsors to attend.  The structure of the high school rally is two fold.  They can choose to come for the entire weekend, or if their schedule only allows for one day attendance, they can attend on Sunday only.

I thank you for all that you continue to do and for the support that you give to our youth.
