and the Diocesan Staff

September 2016 --- Vol. XIV, No.  IX

Catholic Charities of Southwest KansasFor more information about this position, visit http://catholiccharitiesswks.org/home/employment

From Most Rev. John B. Brungardt, Bishop of Dodge City

October Continuing Education Convocation: Priests are asked to review the schedule for the upcoming October Continuing Education Convocation, October 2-6, 2016, at the Spiritual Life Center.  Please take particular note of Monday’s schedule.  Monday’s schedule needed to deviate from our usual schedule to accommodate our presenter, Fr. Turner.  Gayla has previously sent out the registration form. Click Here for the schedule.
Catechist Jubilee: Pope Francis is inviting those involved in Catechesis to take part in the Year of Mercy Jubilee for Catechists in Rome from 23rd to 25th September.  Special jubilee days throughout the year are dedicated to groups of people in the Church.  Sunday, September 25th has been designated by the Holy Father as a Jubilee for Catechists.  In the Diocese of Dodge City, we are anticipating this Jubilee Day on a diocesan level on Sunday, September 18th.  I invite all catechists in Parish Schools of Religion, Parish Faith Formation Programs, RCIA, and our Catholic School Teachers to join me beginning at 2pm at our Cathedral, Sunday, September 18th to celebrate this special day in this special year of Mercy.  Please click here for details in English and here for details in Spanish.  On the 18th we will replicate the activities that the Holy Father will offer to the Catechists gathered with him in Rome.  Catechists play a vital role in the life of the Church. Through word and action these “echoers of the Word” proclaim Christ’s message in such a way so that others may come to know and follow Jesus Christ. These irreplaceable evangelizers provide vitality, witness, and inspiration that is absolutely necessary for the spreading and passing on of the faith. We are taking this day to celebrate the catechists in our diocese.  The Jubilee is our Catechist Formation offering for the 2016-2017 Catechetical Year.  By participating in the Jubilee celebration September 18th, one receives three catechist formation points.
Jubilee of Mercy: Please refer to our Diocesan page for resources

Information on Informed Voting: Parishes have and will probably receive requests to distribute various “Voter’s Guides”. I suggest the Bishops Conference materials, including video resources.  They make whole booklets, short pamphlets, bulletin inserts, etc.  Many are in Spanish as well: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/index.cfm

For example, a front/back bulletin insert (probably a better chance that it will be read than a pamphlet or booklet).

Part One-English

Part II-English

Part I-Spanish

Part II-Spanish

Also, the four Kansas Bishops recorded a video message, English, Spanish, about the election.  It should be distributed in a few weeks on the Kansas Catholic Conference website (http://www.kscathconf.org/), and our own website.

Also, please note that I do not approve the “Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics” for distribution by parishes in our diocese.

Political Activity vis-à-vis 501(c)(3) Organizations – With the political season in full swing, I take this opportunity to remind parish leaders of the prohibition of allowing political candidates or political organizations to use parish facilities or grounds to distribute information that promotes or discourages voting for particular individuals.  For a fuller explanation, go to the Chancellor page on the diocesan website http://www.dcdiocese.org/chancellor).  If questions arise, feel free to contact Sister Janice   This email address is being protected from spambots. The Priest Compensation document, revised annually in July to reflect changes in various aspects of compensation to priests, is now available on the Chancellor page: http://www.dcdiocese.org/chancellor.
The blue Official Catholic Directory pages were mailed to parishes in late August.  Please make appropriate changes, additions and deletions and send it back to Sister Janice by September 30, 2016.  I noted in the cover letter there was an enclosure of an estimated 2013 census figures to assist one in estimating the number of individuals per household in your city.  I missed putting that page in about half of the mailings, so if you didn’t receive this sheet and would like to have it, email Sister Janice and she will send it to you as an attachment.
The August Presbyteral Council meeting was cancelled.   The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 20 at 11 am.   At that meeting we will welcome the newly appointed member Father Aneesh Parappanattu, MSFS.

We have updated the Diocesan NFP page of the Marriage and Family Life section of the website. Visit www.dcdiocese.org/nfp to see an updated listing of teachers, classes that are happening in the diocese, and online classes that are available.  There is also an excellent video from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee posted that is a wonderful introduction to what NFP is and why couples should consider using it in their marriage.  It is a great resource to share with engaged and married couples in your parish.

Formation in Liturgy welcomes all involved in liturgical ministry:  Lectors, Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Greeters, Sacristans, Music Ministers, Priests, Deacons, Liturgy Commission Members, RCIA teams, Art & Environment Committees, Members of the Assembly. Those serving the liturgy of the Church need to have an understanding of the liturgy, an appreciation of particular ministries and their relationship to other ministries, and a willingness to give of their time and talent for the glory of God and for the sake of the assembly.
