CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF DODGE CITY
Monthly Notes from Bishop Brungardt
and the Diocesan Staff
June 2014 --- Vol. XII, No. 6
From Most Rev. John B. Brungardt, Bishop of Dodge City:
► Stewardship Corner – I am beginning a brief, monthly column on Stewardship, in particular focusing on Stewardship Renewal 2014. Idea for this month:
June: Identify who will help with Stewardship Renewal 2014: an existing Stewardship Council, forming a new Council, finding a key person/couple or two, to assist the pastor or Parish Life Coordinator. For small parishes, this might be a member(s) of the Pastoral Council. June should be an organizational time: review of last year’s renewal, goals for this year, beginning to review the Time/Ability and Tithe-Alms forms. Let us promote the Risen Lord’s gift of “Joyfully Receiving and Sharing.” Eric or I will be glad to assist you.
► Ordained Priestly Vocation Corner – I am beginning a brief, monthly column on Ordained Priestly Vocations, in particular, reviewing ideas given by our priests during our Presbyteral Assembly of April 2014. I direct these ideas primarily toward our priests, and others may benefit:
June: Show joy and peace to others—not to complain about how busy we are. Be happy, holy and healthy priests. Show joy in our lives and ministry as ordained priests. Promote a Parish Commission on Vocations that will raise people’s awareness on vocations. Father Wesley and the vocation team, or I will be glad to assist you.
From Sr. Janice Grochowsky, CSJ, JCL, Chancellor:
► TESTIMONIAL OF SUITABILITY – A reminder that if a priest or deacon ministering in the Diocese of Dodge City is going any place outside the diocese for any ministerial activity, we will need to send a Testimonial of Suitability to the appropriate diocese. The same is true for any priest or deacon coming into the Diocese of Dodge City for any ministerial activity: we need to receive a Testimonial of Suitability from a diocesan representative or, if it is a religious priest, from an appropriate authority of his religious congregation.
► A reminder of the following changes:
New: Honorarium: Sacrament of Reconciliation (revision): $30 per each penitential service or confession help out (apart from a regular weekday- and weekend-Mass schedule that includes confessions) plus roundtrip mileage at current IRS rate effective July 1, 2014.
Mass Stipend: At their January meeting, the Kansas Bishops made a decision to raise the standard amount for a Mass stipend from $5 to $10 effective May 1, 2014. Mass Stipend Clarification: The priest is to receive the amount of stipend that was given by the donor at the time of the requested Mass intention. Therefore, if a $5 stipend was donated prior to May 1 but the Mass isn’t celebrated until after May 1, the priest receives $5.
Priest Salary: Bishop Brungardt approved the recommendation of the Presbyteral Council at its 11/19/13 meeting to increase the priest salary by $50: from $2,475 per month to $2,525 per month beginning July 1, 2014.
Click HERE for a document that includes the following items: decree of the new active priest salary amount, reprint of the “Additional Benefit” paid to the priest according to the number of years ordained, the revised Sacrament of Reconciliation help out amount (see above), the revised Mass stipend amount and a side-by-side clarification of which expenses are the responsibility of the parish and which expenses are the responsibility of the priest.

► National Natural Family Planning Awareness Week is July 20-26 - The theme for 2014 is "Natural Family Planning: It's Worth It! Join the Revolution!" See the NFP awareness week poster in English HERE and Spanish HERE.
Natural Family Planning Awareness Week is a national educational campaign. The Natural Family Planning Program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops develops a poster each year with basic supportive materials. It is the individual dioceses however, that offer a variety of educational formats in the local church to focus attention on Natural Family Planning methods and Church teachings which support their use in marriage.
The dates of Natural Family Planning Awareness Week highlight the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood. The dates also mark the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the Blessed Mother.
For more information on NFP awareness week, and to download resources on Natural Family Planning please visit the USCCB Website. Also stay tuned for updates to the diocesan NFP page: www.dcdiocese.org/nfp.
