CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF DODGE CITY
Monthly Notes from Bishop Brungardt
and the Diocesan Staff
September 2014 --- Vol. XII, No. 9
From Most Rev. John B. Brungardt, Bishop of Dodge City:
► Stewardship Corner –
September: Scheduling should be finalized: ministry fair, lay witness talks, follow-up dates/plans. Forms should be completed and distribution dates/manner finalized. How to promote Stewardship Renewal and the Four Pillars in the school/PSR/RCIA/adult faith formation areas this Fall? Thank you for the participation of your parishioners in the Stewardship Conference on August 23! See other details on pp. 6-7 of our Recommendations and Ideas guide. Let Eric or I know if we can assist.
► Ordained Priestly Vocation Corner –
September: Brother priests: As we implement our Stewardship Renewal this Fall, let us invite particular boys and single men in our parish to volunteer their time & ability in an area of hospitality, prayer, formation, and/or service for the parish. This living of their Catholic faith assists them in listening to their vocational call from the Lord. Father Wesley and the vocation team, or I will be glad to assist you in any vocation matter.
► Convocation – is scheduled for October 5-9, 2014, at the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita.
From Sr. Janice Grochowsky, CSJ, JCL, Chancellor:
► The Official Catholic Directory blue sheets recently arrived and will soon be mailed to each parish. Please make revisions to personnel and provide the statistics that are requested (such as number of students in religious education, number of students in parish Catholic school and sacraments). Deadline to return the completed sheets to Sr. Janice is September 29, 2014.
► November 1 – All Saints Day
Several months ago the USCCB Committee on Divine Worship sent out the following paragraph regarding Saturday, November 1:
“Since Saturday is a common day for the celebration of marriage in the United States, it should also be noted that Ritual Masses are forbidden on All Saints Day (General Instruction of the Roman Missal no. 372). While the Ritual Mass for the Celebration of Marriage is forbidden, the Mass of the day with the ritual itself and the nuptial blessing could be celebrated. Alternatively, the Rite of Marriage outside Mass could also be used if the celebration of Marriage is to take place on this day. (Ritual Masses are also forbidden on All Soul’s Day.) As a reminder, All Saints Day is not a holy day of obligation this year, owing to the 1992 decision of the USCCB abrogating the precept to attend Mass when November 1 falls on a Saturday or Monday. Therefore, funeral Masses may be celebrated on this day (see GIRM, no. 380).”
If a wedding Mass has already been scheduled for November 1, please contact Bishop John for consultation.
I will be out of the office September 16-21 and October 11-16. Please be sure to send in prenuptial documents well in advance of the wedding, especially if a lack of form annulment process is needed for one of the parties.
From Daniel Stremel, Director of the Finance Office:
► Fr. Charles Mazouch, who has worked with the Diocesan Finance Office for years on parish accounting software, is available to assist parishes, pastors, and bookkeepers with parish accounting and census software issues. Fr. Mazouch is especially knowledgeable with Parish Data Systems (PDS) software. We are grateful to Fr. Mazouch for offering his talents in this important area and would encourage you to contact him at the rectory in Olmitz if you would like to enlist his assistance. You are also welcome to contact myself or John Ackerman here at the Chancery Office as well if you have questions or need further help.
From Mark Roth, Director of Development:
► Fruit of the Vine – Work of Human Hands
You may recall in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s that the diocese sponsored a program called “God’s Little Green Acre”, a program to support seminarian education in the Diocese of Dodge City.
The program has recently been resurrected, but with a few more options. The program is now called “Fruit of the Vine - Work of Human Hands” and offers two ways to participate:
Fruit of the Vine is for individuals who would like to pledge profits from their earthly labors, such as profits from crop production, sale of livestock, oil production, wind generation profits…etc.
Work of Human Hands is designed for individuals or businesses who would like to pledge a portion of their business profits, annual income or simply give a cash donation to support our seminarians within the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City.
Participation in the program will not only support our seminarians, but it will also provide a reminder to others who see your plaque or sign to pray for vocations, and will encourage others to participate as well. Please prayerfully discern supporting seminarian education in the Diocese of Dodge City through “Fruit of the Vine - Work of Human Hands” by completing one of the applications (Click here for Applications and more information) and returning it to me at your earliest convenience. If you know of others who might be interested in participating, please list their names as well so we can contact them too.
Thank you in advance for your generous support and consideration of this program. If you need further information or if I can be of assistance to you in any other way, please feel free to contact me.
