Verna Lee Roth,
67, of St. Mary Parish, Garden City, died March 27, 2007. She was a clerk of
the district court for the state of Kansas.
She is survived by her husband, Joe A. Roth; two sons; two daughters,
including, Sherry Roth; and six grandchildren. Father Tony Judge presided.
Pedro A. Mesquita-Tobias,
42, of St. Mary Parish, Garden City, died March 27, 2007. He worked at National
Beef. He is survived by his mother, Dora Mesquita;
his wife, Maria Cristina Cardenas; a son, Hugo Antonio; a daughter, Maria
Cristina Mesquita; three brothers, Santiago, Tomas, and Daniel; and a sister, Mirna Mesquita. Father Carlos

Raymond “Ray” Leon Land,
63, of Holy Rosary Parish, Medicine Lodge, died April 1, 2007. He was a 4th
Degree Knights of Columbus. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the
Vietnam Conflict and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He is survived by his wife,
Frances Pelzel-Swonger; a son, Raymond H.; three
daughters, Tracey Owens, Renee Paxson, and Jackie
Wood; two brothers, Sammy Haygood and David Haygood; a sister, Eletha Smith;
and 18 grandchildren. Father John Strasser presided.
Pilar M. Sandoval, 81, of the
Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Dodge City, died April 1, 2007. She was a
certified nurses’ aide at Fulmer’s Convalescent Home, St. Anthony’s Hospital
and was at the Good Samaritan Center for 38 years. Survivors include three
sons, Dan, Anthony, and Nick; her sister, Natalia
Lopez; 19 grandchildren; and 42 great grandchildren. Father Trong
Tran presided.
Roy W. Baier,
81, of St. Michael Parish, died April 4, 2007. He was a 3rd Degree Knights of
Columbus Council No. 2970, and a member of the 4th Degree Bishop Cunningham
Assembly No. 282, Hays. He served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife,
Bernadette J. Bellendir; three sons, Mark J., Robert
J., and Richard J.; a sister, Louise Walker; and seven grandchildren. Father
Rene Labrador presided.
Paul John Burkhart,
87, of St. Raphael Parish, Syracuse,
died April 8, 2007. He was a fourth degree knight in the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Hendry; two daughters, Kathleen and Maureen
Burkhart-Carr; two stepsons, Thomas and Charles Smith; a sister, Monica Reilley; two brothers, Isadore
“Burk” Burkhart, and Elred; nine grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.
Pauline T. Von Feldt,
67, of St. Anthony Parish, Liberal, died April 8, 2007. She was a member of the
Altar Society. Survivors include three brothers, Roy, Rudy, and Richard; and a
sister, Albertine Denning. Father John Fahey

Gerald E. Helfrich,
83, of Prince of Peace Parish, Great
Bend, died April 9, 2007. He belonged to the Knights
of Columbus Council No. 862. He served in the United States Marine Corps and
was a World War II veteran. Survivors include a son, John M.; two daughters,
Shannon M. Smith and Kimberley K. Morse; three stepsons, William, Frank, and
Brad Clair; five stepdaughters, Melissa Donovan, Melinda Clair, Michele McFarran, Sherry Price, and Gerise
Vignaroli; a sister, Mary Hester; 30 grandchildren;
and eight great-grandchildren. Father Reginald A. Urban officiated.
Joshua Leo Stratman,
28, of St. Dominic Parish, Garden City, died April 9, 2007. He was a physical
therapist at Kearny
County Hospital,
Lakin. He was a member of the 3rd Degree Knights of
Columbus No. 8491, and of the St. Dominic Gospel Choir. Survivors include his
wife, Dacia Lynn Daniels; a daughter, Isabel; his parents, Butch and Marilyn
Williams Stratman; two brothers, Dr. Erik Stratman and Dr. Aaron Stratman;
and several nieces and nephews. Father Joseph Bahr presided.
August R. “Gus” Schremmer,
97, of St. John the Evangelist Parish,
Hoisington, died April 12, 2007. He was a farmer and stockman, and belonged to
the Knights of Columbus Odin Council No. 2630. Survivors include four sons,
Gene, Bill, Jim, and Ron; three daughters, Pat Proksch,
Lois Klug, and Karen Bishop; a sister, Dorothy Polzin;
a daughter-in-law, Helen Schremmer; 20 grandchildren; and 34
great-grandchildren. Father Pascal Klein presided.
Marcelo Hipolito,
Jr., 1, of the Cathedral of Our Lady of
Guadalupe Parish, Dodge City,
died April 11, 2007. He was born March 23, 2006, in Dodge City, the son of Marcelo and Maria
Guadalupe Arenas Hipolito, Sr. Survivors include his
parents; a brother, Irenio; a sister, Joana;
grandparents, Irenio Hipolito,
Narsiso Arenas, Maria Lopez and Margarita Dominquez;
four uncles, Benigno Arenas, Sergio Arenas, Antonio Hipolito and Erasmo Hipolito; two aunts, Rumalda Hipolito and Ramona Hipolito; and

Timotea “Timmie” Garcia Hernandez,
78, of St. Anthony Parish, Lakin, died April 12,
2007. Survivors include four sons, Leonard, Dennis, Tom, and Mark; two
daughters, Mary Lou Garcia and JoAnn Woods; three
brothers, Maurillo Silva, Circilio
Silva, and Tony Garcia; three sisters, Jennie Bribiesca,
Frances Medina, and Florence Rodriguez; 18 grandchildren; 47
great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Father Mike Helms

Luella Krampe,
94, of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Seward, died April 12, 2007. She belonged to
the Altar Society. Survivors include two sons, Lynn and Don; a daughter,
Corinne Baldwin; a sister, Anna Habiger; four
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Father Rene Labrador presided.
Oscar “Bud” Peintner,
94, of St. John the Baptist Parish, Spearville, died April 14, 2007. He belonged to the 4th
Degree Knights of Columbus, and Knights of Columbus Council No. 2462. He served
in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Survivors include a brother,
Leonard; seven sisters, Dorothy Ambler, Tillie Weltza,
Martha Fuller, Louise Schroeder, Helen Lett, Delores Ravenkamp, and Jody Lubbers; a stepbrother, Andrew Naab; and two stepsisters, Dorothy Shook and Virginia Naab. Father Ted Stoecklein

Petra Ortiz-San Juan,
73, of St. Mary Parish, Garden City, died April 14, 2007. She is survived by
her husband, Rodrigo San Juan; four sons, Fernando, Armando, Victoriano, and Francisco Salvador; two daughters, Lucia
San Juan Franco and Lorenza San Juan; three sisters, Refugia Salvador, Teresa Ortiz, and Emilia Zamudio; 31 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two

Thomas J. Schmidt,
53, of Prince of Peace Parish, Great
Bend, died April 15, 2007. He was a truck driver for
Jack B. Kelly Company, Amarillo,
Texas. Survivors include his

Schmidt; four brothers, Steve, Roger, George, and Mike; two sisters, Joyce

Augusta “Shorty” Irene Voss, 68, of Sacred Heart Parish, Pratt, died April 15, 2007.
She belonged to the Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella. She is survived by
her husband, Lawrence B. Voss; two daughters, Diana Howell and Anita Rojas;
four sons, John, Ken, Steven, and Don Voss; two sisters, Marlene Bortz and Rosemary Cisco; two brothers, Floyd Spade and
Darrel Spade; 15 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Father Gregory S.
