Editor's
note: Bishop Ronald Gilmore celebrated a memorial Mass for Pope
John Paul II at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, April 7. The
bishop’s homily was adapted into his column, which ran in the last issue.
It is reprinted below. In the end, even the word was taken from this man of words. Our unspeaking pope, John Paul II, Karol Joseph Wojtyla, has died. He was not always thus. He believed that power is in the word spoken and received. He believed the power of the word is that on which the world turns. He was a veritable servant of the word. And so we mourn for the pope we have lost. He gave unstintingly of himself for the twenty-six years of his papacy, and through the word of his life he led us ever more deeply into the mystery of man and woman, into the mystery of Christ. And so we mourn for the man we have lost. He was athlete, actor, poet, priest, philosopher, bishop, pope, mystic, and through the word of his life he never ceased to amaze us. And so we mourn for the original we have lost. He was never before seen. He will never be seen again. Through the word of his life he left a unique human imprint upon our Church and upon our world. He was a man. Take him for all in all, Hamlet said, I shall not look upon his like again. In the end, even the word was taken from this man of words. Now it is taken from us too. To find it again, we must go to the Eternal Word. May he rest in silent peace.
