Two days after hosting a Natural Family Planning information/appreciation session at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Robin Winkler provided a lesson in the miracle of creation that is at the foundation of the program: she gave birth.

On Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 9:57 p.m., just two days after more than 30 people gathered to learn — and to show their appreciation for — NFP, Winkler gave birth to a seven pound, five ounce girl, aptly named, "Grace."

NFP offers several natural methods for charting ovulation, and thus increasing chances of achieving or avoiding a pregnancy. One of the prime directives of NFP, and just one of many differences between the natural family planning method and contraception, is the maxim that with every act of intercourse, one must be open to the creation of new life.

The methodology, as well as detailed instruction regarding NFP, are taught at various classes held throughout the year. The program held on Aug. 1 was, rather, reserved for matters of the heart, explained Winkler, who, with Father Ted Skalsky, organized the session.

"We had it just to let those people who are using NFP know that we support them," Winkler said. "Also, we extended an invitation to those who wanted to learn more about NFP.

"NFP promotes deeper spirituality and love in the family," she added, and asserted that the program is "99 percent effective when used to postpone pregnancy. However, we have found that NFP helps couples to appreciate more fully God’s gift of children."

Several couples attended the event – held first in English and then in Spanish — and included as speakers three couples from Wichita: Judith and Gerald Leonard, Larry and Carol Glenn, and Dr. Hector Fernandez, and his wife/nurse, Jo. Bishop Ronald Gilmore also attended the session, after first addressing the subject in his Sunday homily.

"Like the people of the Old Testament and the people of the New Testament," the bishop said, "the people of the Church have always prized sexuality as a great gift. They have always thought, and the Church has always taught, that sexual activity is good and proper only within marriage itself. Further, they have always thought, and the Church has always taught, that even within marriage, sexual activity must respect the biological and the psychological structure of the act itself. They have always thought, and the Church has always taught, that we must respect the truth of the conjugal act itself.

"That truth is rich, complex, baffling, mysterious," Bishop Gilmore added. "Its meaning is more than meaning is beyond meaning. We shall never exhaust the meaning of this created mystery. But our tradition does tell us that our sexual powers are used properly only when they are a sign and cause of love, and only when they are open to the possibility of new life. Winkler became an NFP instructor through the NFP office in the Diocese of Wichita, under the guidance of Judith Leonard. Winkler has taught the method for about a year, and, with her husband, Wayne, has used the method for more than 12 years.

"For us, the number-one positive attribute is the communication in our marriage," she said. "The closeness and intimacy is amazing. Second is the naturalness of not putting any chemicals into my body, not putting any barriers between us. Number three is the beauty. Any time we welcome a new child into our home, that’s the beauty of natural family planning."

Dr. Hector Fernandez, and his wife, Jo, have operated the Holy Family Clinic in Wichita for eight years, offering only NFP as a method for family planning.

What do they tell patients who ask for prescribed artificial contraceptives?

"We tell them that our office does not prescribe artificial contraception for several reasons," Fernandez said. "We tell them that we are Catholic and that we believe, understand and uphold the teachings of the Church. We discuss with them the benefits of NFP and the negative effects of artificial contraception. We also make them understand that we care about their health and wish them peace and love in their families. They usually end up attending one of my classes held every third Monday of the month. Or they set up a private appointment."

Another stunning benefit is that for those who use the method, the divorce rate is drastically reduced, she said. According to Fernandez, in the decade following the introduction of "the Pill," divorce increased 400 percent.

"The issue of fertility is an immense responsibility in every marriage. Where artificial contraception imposes that responsibility solely on the husband or the wife, NFP involves a shared responsibility between husband and wife. Decisions made are based on the mutual love and respect the couple has for each other and their willingness to sacrifice for the well-being of the whole family. In and through this willingness and sacrifice, the marriage is blessed and strengthened by extraordinary graces poured down by God Himself. We only have to look at what Jesus’ sacrifice and death on the cross have done for us."

Larry and Carol Glenn were both born and reared in Dodge City, and, like many couples, "kept God out of our bedroom. We decided birth control was the way to go. We pushed God aside."

Carol Glenn began using an "IUD" birth control device, until her sister, a nurse, told her that the "IUD and the effects it can have" are similar to an abortion.

"I immediately had it removed, and started the Pill," she said. "I went from one evil to another."

It wasn’t until attending a retreat in Victoria where a priest spoke on the sin of birth control, that she said her "eyes were open."

"The pain and joy was with me when I came and told Larry the story," she said. "After all these years, I wanted to start practicing NFP."

With her husband smiling at her side as she spoke, Glenn admitted that at first, NFP brought consternation to her marriage, as the timing NFP requires can sometimes take a little getting used to, especially for the men.

"Larry was not ready to change something that we had practiced all these years," she said. "Once we were open to life, we realized how much birth control had hurt our marriage. It took a while before things calmed down. Once it did, I found out I really enjoyed being married to Larry again. It had opened up true love between the three of us, myself, Larry, and God."

Judith Leonard, the director of the Natural Family Planning office of the Diocese of Wichita, cited a recent study. The study, conducted by the Family of the Americas Foundation, found that "couples who practice NFP tend to go to church more often, pray togtether, are more satisfied with their marriage, and the divorce rate is 0.2 percent.

"NFP isn’t true because the Church teaches it," she said, "the Church teaches it because it’s true."

Planificación Familiar Natural

Varias parejas asistieron al evento que tuvo lugar primero en ingles y después en Español, y había tres charlistas, tres parejas de Wichita – Judith y Gerald Leonard, Larry y Carol Glenn, y el Dr. Hector Fernández y su esposa/enfermera, Jo. El Obispo Ronald Gilmore también estuvo presente en la session, después de haber abordado el tema en su homilía dominical. "Al igual que la gente del Antiguo Testamento y la gente del Nuevo Testamento," el Obispo dijo, " la gente de la Iglesia siempre ha apreciado la sexualidad como un gran don. Ellos siempre han pensado, y la Iglesia siempre nos ha enseñado que la actividad sexual es buena y correcta solamente dentro del matrimonio. Además siempre pensaron y la Iglesia siempre nos ha enseñado que incluso dentro del matrimonio, la actividad sexual debe respetar la estructura biológica y psicológica del acto sexual en si. Siempre han pensado y la Iglesia siempre nos ha enseñado que debemos respetar la verdad del acto conyugal."

"Esa verdad es rica, compleja, misteriosa", añadió el Obispo Gilmore. Su significado es más que significado, está más allá del significado. Jamás agotaremos el significado de este misterio creado. Pero nuestra tradición nos dice que los poderes sexuales se utilizan correctamente solamente cuando son una señal y causa de amor y solo cuando están abiertos a la posibilidad de engendrar una nueva vida. Winkler se hizo instructora de PFN en la oficina central en Wichita, bajo la tutorial de Judith Leonard. Winkler ha enseñado el método durante aproximádamente un año. Ella y su marido, Wayne, han utilizado el método durante más de 12 años. "Para nosotros, el atributo número uno es la comunicación en nuestro matrimonio", dijo. "La proximidad y la intimidad es asombrosa. Lo segundo es la naturalidad de no poner nada de químicos en mi cuerpo y no poner barreras entre nosotros. Lo tercero es la belleza. El Dr. Hector Fernánde y su esposa, Jo diregen, desde hace ocho años, la Clínica de la Sagrada Familia en Wichita, en donde ofrecen solamente el método de Planificación Familiar Natural como método para planificación familiar. ¿Qué dicen a los pacientes que piden anticonceptivos?

"Les decimos que nuestra oficina no prescribe anticonceptivos por diversas raznoes", dijo Fernández. "Les decimos que somos Católicos y que creemos, entendemos y seguimos las enseñanzas de la Iglesia. Queremos lo que es major para nuestros pacientes. Les hablamos de lo sano que es la Planificación Familiar Natural, todos sus efectos positivos. Normalmente acaban viniendo a alguna de mis clases, que tiene lugar el tercer lunes de cada mes. O piden una cita conmigo." Otro beneficio sorprendente es que para aquellos que usan el método, la tasa de divorcio se rebjaja drasticámente", ella dijo. Que diferencia de la tasa de divorcio con el uso de la pildroa que en la decada después de su introducción, el divorcio aumentó un 400%.

"El asunto de la fertilidad es una gran responsabilidad. Con los anticonceptivos, esa responsabilidad unicamente pertenece al marido o a la mujer. En la Planificación Familiar Natural la responsabilidad es compartida. Las decisions tomadas se basan en el mutuo amor y respeto que la pareja se tiene el uno al otro, y su deseo de sacrificarse por el bien de la familia. En y a través de este sacrifice, el matrimonio se fortalice con las gracias extraordinarias que Dios mismo derrama sobre la pareja. Solamente tenemos que mirar el sacrificio y la muerte de Cristo en la Cruz por nosotros. Estas gracias y la voluntad de sacrificio hace que la pareja se fortalezca, disminuyendo así los casos de divorcio."

Larry y Carol Glenn ambos nacieron y se criaron en Dodge City y como muchos matrimonies "mantenía a Dios fuera del dormitorio. Decidimos practicar el control de natalidad y nos alejamos de Dios." Carol empezó utilizando un DIU, aparato de control de natalidad, hasta que una hermana suya enfermera le contó que el DIU y sus efectos son similares a un aborto. "Me lo hice quitar inmediatamente, y empecé a tomar la pildora", dijo. "Fui de un mal a otro mal." No fue hasta después de asistir a un retiro en Victoria, donde un sacerdote nos habló del pecado de los anticonceptivos y los métodos artificiales de control de natalidad", dijo, "cuando se me abrieron los ojos."

"Con pena y alegría le contó a Larry la historia" dijo ella. "Después de todos estos años, yo quería empezar la Planificación Familiar Natrual." Con su marido sonriendo a su lado, ella habló. Glenn admitió que, al principio, la Planificación Familiar Natural trajo un poco de consternación en su matrimonio, ya que se require acostumbrarse un poco a utilizar los momentos oportunos. "Larry no estaba dispuesto a cambiar algo que habiamos practicado todos estos años. Pero una vez que nos abrimos a la vida, nos dimos cuenta de lo mucho que nos había hecho daño los anticonceptivos. Tuvo que pasar algún tiempo hasta que las cosas se calmaran. Y entonces me di cuenta de lo mucho que me gustaba estar casada con Larry. Abrió el amor verdadero entre nosotros tres – Larry, yo y Dios."

Judith Leonard, directora de la Oficina de Planficiación Familiar Natural en Wichita, observó que lose studios más recientes de la Planificación Familiar Natrual demuestran que el método es efectivo al 100%. Dijo que ella comprendía que el método podia hacer "algunos de ustedes temerosos o nerviosos", pero lo cierto es que da paz y seguridad a un matrimonio." La planificación familiar natural no es verdad porque la Iglesia la enseña; la Iglesia la enseña porque es verdad.
