A pro-life road trip to Topeka

Participants will meet in Dodge City and Great Bend Monday, Jan. 23, where they’ll depart via bus or van to the state capitol to take part in the annual pro-life rally, which will include a Mass celebrated by Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore.

Participants also will be able to enjoy lunch and a little sight-seeing.

Leading the group will be Father Wesley Schawe, who is excited not only about the rally and his first trip to Topeka, but about the journey, as well.

"The journey there and home is not just a means to get there," he said. "You’ll be able to get to know people and connect with other youth from across the diocese.

"I know you miss a day of school, but I think the education that comes from this day will be pretty valuable in its own right," he added. "This will be an opportunity for our young people to bring their faith to life, and put their beliefs into action."

Adults also are invited, but only if there are still seats available after the registration deadline has passed. The cost for youth is $20, and $35 for adults registering after the Jan. 9 deadline. Adults may wish to sponsor a youth for $20. Chaperones are also needed.

Father Schawe said he would like "parishes to consider either covering the cost or asking interested adults who can’t go to sponsor a student."

Jan. 23 falls the day after the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion. The rally usually takes place on the anniversary day. Because this year the anniversary falls on a Sunday, organizers planned a Monday rally, when Congress is in session.

"The rally is not just about an end to legalized abortion, although that’s an important focus," Father Schawe said. "It’s important for us to recognize that life in whatever stage deserves to be respected. That day is the logical day to draw attention to that.

"Every day should be a pro-life day," he added. "But if we’re supposed to pick a day where it’s on people’s minds, on people’s TVs, and on the radio, that’s the day to bring it to their attention.

"I hope other youth will be there. That’s part of the magic of bringing youth together; we have a common purpose, a common goal. It’s all right to stand up for ourselves. Finding support is important."

Participants will depart from Dodge City at 5 a.m., with one stop in Great Bend. If enough people from the far western region of the diocese wish to attend, Father Schawe will make arrangements for their transportation to Dodge City.

The rally on the steps of the capitol will begin at 10:30 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at noon across the street at Assumption Church, with Bishop Gilmore as the guest principal celebrant. Lunch will be served at the church at 1:30 p.m. From 2-3:30 p.m., participants can take part in activities around the capital, or can do a some sight-seeing. The group will head back at 3:30 p.m.

"It’s a long day, and a school day, but I think it will be an educational and memorable experience for our youth," Father Schawe said.

Jóvenes invitados a viaje pro-life a Topeka

Jóvenes estudiantes de College y de High School son invitados a hacer un viaje a Topeka.

El lunes 23 de Enero, los participantes se reunirán en Dodge City y Great Bend, de donde partirán, en autobús o camioneta, a la capital del estado para participar en el rally anual pro-life, que incluirá un Misa celebrada por el Obispo Ronald M. Gilmore.

Los participantes podrán también disfrutar del lunch, y de algunas visitas.

Conducirá el grupo el P. Wesley Schawe, quien está entusiasmado no sólo por el rally, y su primer ida a Topeka, sino por el viaje también.

"El viaje allá y de regreso es no sólo un medio de llegar allá", dijo, "podrás conocer otras gentes, y conectarte con otros jóvenes de la diócesis.

"Sé que perderás un día de clases, pero pienso que la educación que venga de ese día será muy valiosa por sí misma. ", añadió. "Ésta será una oportunidad para que nuestros jóvenes hagan vivir su fe, y pongan en acción sus creencias."

También se invita a los adultos, pero sólo si todavía hay asientos disponibles después de la fecha final para inscribirse. El costo para jóvenes es de $20, y $35 para los adultos que se registren antes del 9 de Enero, fecha final. Adultos que no puedan asistir, podrían apadrinar a un joven por $20. Se necesitan acompañantes adultos.

El Padre Schawe dijo que le gustaría que "las parroquias consideraran o bien aportar el costo, o pedir a adultos que no puedan asistir apadrinar a algún estudiante".

El 23 de Enero es un día después del aniversario de la decisión Roe vs Wade de legalizar el aborto. El rally se hace ordinariamente el día del aniversario. Como este año el aniversario cae en domingo, los organizadores planearon un rally el lunes, cuando el Congreso sesiona.

"El rally no es únicamente para que se termine la legalización del aborto, aunque es un importante objetivo," dijo el Padre Schawe. "Es importante para nosotros reconocer que la vida, en cualquiera de sus etapas merece ser respetada. Ese día es el día lógico para atraer la atención a eso.

"Todos los días deberían ser un día pro-life", añadió. "Pero si se supone que debemos escoger un día en el que está en la mente de las personas, en la televisión, y en el radio, éste es el día para llevarlo a su atención.

"Espero que nuestros jóvenes estén ahí. Esto es parte de la magia de reunir a los jóvenes; tenemos un propósito común, una meta común. Está bien salir por nosotros mismos. Encontrar apoyo es importante."

Los participantes saldrán de Dodge City a las 5 a.m., con un alto en Great Bend. Si hay un número suficiente de gente de las partes lejanas de la región oeste que deseen asistir, el Padre Schawe hará arreglos para su transporte a Dodge City.

El rally, en la escalinata del capitolio, empieza a las 10:30 a.m. La Misa se celebrará al mediodía, en la calle de enfrente, en la Iglesia de la Asunción, con el Obispo Gilmore como celebrante principal huésped. Se servirá el lunch en la iglesia, a la 1:30 p.m. De las 2 a las 3:30, los participantes pueden tomar actividades en torno al capitolio, o pueden visitar sitios interesantes. El grupo empezará el regreso a las 3:30 p.m.

"Es un día largo, y un día de clases, pero creo que será una experiencia educacional y memorable para nuestros jóvenes, " dijo el Padre Schawe.
