The Sacred Heart statue at Mary Queen of Peace Church
in Ulysses has found a new home. Actually it’s returning home.
The statue, according to the best records found, was
purchased along with the church’s St. Joseph Statue, the Corpus of the
Crucifix, and the Stations of the Cross for $1,300 in 1963. To replace
them would have required thousands of dollars.
When many people asked, "Where did we get the new
statue?" they were surprised to learn that it wasn’t new, but instead had
been "hidden" in the corner of the Blessed Mother Shrine of Our Lady of
Guadalupe.
For the past year, the Pastoral Council considered
possibilities to give the statue its own space. Parishioner Rene Hernandez
(see his photo on Page 11) accepted the project of moving the statue and
creating the new space. His idea was to blend in the architecture and
imitate the existing rererdo (backdrop) behind the crucifix.
It is appropriate that the Sacred Heart image falls
between the Crucifixion and the Pieta of the Stations of the Cross. This
corner of the church was the statue’s original home, but was moved in the
previous remodeling of the church.
From the revelations of Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary
Alacoque, "He should be honored under the figure of the Heart of flesh,
and its image should be exposed with a view to showing it special honor.
He would pour forth His blessings and graces."
