Margaret Jeanne Curtis, 63, of Sacred Heart Parish, Ness City, died Feb. 19, 2008. She was a dietitian and worked at the Ness City Leisure Years Center. Survivors include her husband, Jim Curtis; a daughter, Margaret Ballard; two stepsons, Michael and Delvin; a brother, Donald Lindsey; three sisters, Donna Jackson, Bonnie, Elizabeth Sherman; and eight grandchildren. Dale Eugene Schartz, 50, of St. Joseph Parish, Ellinwood, died Feb. 24, 2008. A fourth-generation farmer and rancher, and was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Seward. Survivors include his parents, LeRoy and Theresa Herrman Schartz; his wife, Carol Salmans; two sons, Justin Lee and Derek Eugene Schartz; two daughters, Andrea Diane and Nicole Marie Schartz; three brothers, LeRoy, Jr., Kevin, and Kyle; two sisters, Betty Riggs and Lana Brown; a granddaughter; and nieces and nephews. Gertrude “Tule” Moreno Jaso, of St. John the Apostle Parish, Kiowa, died Feb. 21, 2008. Born in Mexico, Tule attended school to the sixth grade; she did housecleaning and ironing for several businesses. She belonged to the Altar Society. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Jaso; three sons, Richard, Danny, and Bobby; two daughter, Kathy Gonzales and Dolores Moreno; a sister, Hope Moreno; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. LeRoy B. Gerstenkorn, 79, of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick, Great Bend, died Feb. 22, 2008. He was the co-owner of City Ice, Great Bend, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Campbell; a son, Kevin; four daughters, Deborah Daniel, Sue Hemphill, Lisa Seiwert, and Jennifer Hoskins; four sisters, Gemella Esfeld, Joan Gorman, Alice Birch, and Patsy Lang; 10 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter, Adalyn Hemphill. Mary Jane Martinez, 69, of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Dodge City, died Feb. 24, 2008. Survivors include three brothers, Leo, Tony, and Daniel Martinez; and many nieces and nephews. Father Ted Skalsky presided.

Peter Janatello, 88, of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose, Great Bend, died Feb. 27, 2008.  He was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Angelica Scotti; a son, Anthony “Pete” Janatello; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Father Floyd McKinney presided.

Sylvester A. “Sal” Goscha, 84, of St. Dominic Parish, Great Bend, died Feb. 21, 2008. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 2795, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Josephine A. Schuetz; two sons, Larry and Robert; three daughters, Diana Johnson, Jolene Buxman, and Nancy Goscha; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Father Floyd McKinney presided.

Theresa Margaret Sandblade, 84, of Sacred Heart Parish, Larned, died Feb. 22, 2008. She was the Philsco Products office manager for 20 years. Survivors include her husband, Phillip J. Thomas “Tom” M. Walter, 83, of St. Lawrence Parish, Jetmore, died February 22, 2008. He was a farmer and stockman, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Norma Lee Schawe; three daughters, Judi St. Romain, Connie Driscoll, and Lisa Vehle; one son, Mike L. David Boyce-Rojas, 32, of St. Mary Parish, Garden City, died Feb. 27, 2008. He was a member of the Patriot Guard and worked with the Kansas Special Olympics. Evelyn M. Bahr, 76, of Hoisington, died March 1, 2008. She was a seamstress at Surburban Laundry, Hoisington, for 28 years. Henry J. Hain, 86, of St. John the Baptist Parish, Spearville, died March 1, 2008. He taught at St. Theresa School, Leoti, and later for Valley Pride School, South of Windthorst. Loretta Mae Gillen, 80, of St. John the Baptist Parish, Meade, died March 1, 2008. A lifetime Meade resident, she was a homemaker. Luella P. Schwager, 85, of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick, Great Bend, died Feb. 29, 2008. She was a homemaker, and a member of the Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella. Survivors include five sons, Robert, Roger, Ricky, Ronald, and Raymond; three daughters, Jeanette Soper, Diana Sanders, and Shirley Headley; two brothers, Irvin Burhenn and Virgil Burhenn; two sisters, Evelyn Schartz and Flossie Dewey; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Janice Marie Effertz, 51, of Great Bend, died Jan. 26, 2008, at her home, Great Bend. She was a caregiver at Sunflower Diversified Services. Survivors include her father and stepmother, Henry and Diane Effertz; her mother, Sharon Servi; three brothers, Steve, Doug, and Anthony; a half-brother, Jon Servi; a half-sister, Jackie Zube; two stepbrothers, Ryan Brack and Landon Brack; a stepsister, Alana Blessing; and a companion, Mike McMullen. Luz R. Andrade, 93, of St. Anthony Parish, Liberal, died March 1, 2008. She had worked for Central Supply instrument sterilization at Southwest Medical Center, Liberal. Andrade; three daugthers, Mary Goodpaster, Julia Gardner, and Jeannie Justice; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.  Father Tony Judge presided.

Chester Roy Watkins, 86, of Great Bend, died March 4, 2008. He was an oilfield worker. Survivors include four daughters, Ruth Weber, Charlotte Lackey, Sandy Byers, and Pamela Davidson; three brothers, Loyd Watkins, Cleo Watkins, and Jesse Watkins; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and six step grandchildren.
