‘Listen to Him’
A Column by the Most Rev. Ronald M. Gilmore

He was transfigured before their eyes. His face was like the sun. His clothes were like the light. It is a scene to ponder. How did earlier Christians think about this
mysterious event?
In the 3rd century, Origen said that for
Peter, James, and John on the mountain, Jesus did not have just the form of a
servant. He had the form of the God he
always was. Origen thought that the
moment of the Transfiguration provided a pattern of that resurrection that was
to come.
He was also beguiled by
the aftermath of Jesus’ touch. But
after the touch of the Word, they lifted up their eyes. They saw Jesus only, and no other. Moses and the Law, Elijah and the prophets:
they had become one with the Gospel of Jesus.
All the Old Testament pointed to him. All the Old Testament was fulfilled in him.
Jesus only, and no other.
In the 5th century,
If you think about it, he said, the clothes
were made light by the one who wore them.
We are meant to be like those clothes.
We are meant to be made light by the Transfigured One. We are meant to let the Lightsome One shine
through us. We are meant to take on the
brightness of his truth.
These are the days for us to open ourselves
to his light. They saw Jesus only,
and no other. Listen to him.

asemejarnos a aquellas vestiduras.
nosotros. Nos suponemos tomar el
resplandor de su verdad.
Estos son los días
para nostros para abrinos a su luz. Ellos vieron
sólo a Jesús, y a ningún otro. Escúchenlo.
