Almost 70 percent of Catholics under the age of 30 in the Dodge City
diocese are Hispanic, which has created an immense pastoral challenge to
the Church of southwest Kansas even as it offers a great wealth of
vitality to the Church.
The 34 youth and adults who attended the first session of
the basic course in Hispanic Youth Pastoral Ministry, given by the
Institute of Faith and Life, seemed to sense both the challenge and the
blessing of this moment in the life of the Church.
Five of the parishes represented at the Feb. 7-8 event
were Dodge City, Garden City, Ulysses, Satanta and Liberal, each bringing
with them the hope of expanding the ministerial outreach to young
Hispanics.
The Faith and Life Institute is a Catholic organization
that offers programs of formation in Hispanic youth pastoral ministry.
Adriana Visoso-Valverde of Reno, Nevada gave the first weekend session.
The first day of the course was devoted to the pastoral reality of the
young Hispanics in the United States and some of the differing approaches
to youth ministry found in Latin American countries and the U.S.
The Institute’s workshops creatively combine instruction
in the issues of Hispanic youth ministry by using work in small groups in
order to demonstrate the methodology used in youth pastoral work. The
program is solidly based on the "National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic
Ministry" and uses very effectively the Plan’s model for pastoral
planning See, Judge and Act (Ver, Juzgar y Actuar). The course always
includes good scripture and theological reflections.
Visoso emphasized to the participants the importance of
developing a youth pastoral ministry which was directed towards youth,
carried out with youth, coming from the life experiences of youth and
realized by youth. The goal is always to that youth discover, following
and announce the living Christ.
The next session of the workshop will be held at St.
Alphonsus parish, Satanta March 27-28. The themes for the weekend will
include, the sacramental life, Christian spirituality, and the path to
mature personhood. For more information call Father John Fahey-Guerra or
Father Mike McAndrew at (620) 624-7846.
