‘Listen to Him’

As I write these lines the priests and I are about to begin a series of conversations on their call from God. I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God bestowed when my hands were laid upon you, Paul wrote his beloved Timothy. (2 Tim 1: 6) That’s what we’ll be about, that stirring into flame.
God called these priests and sent them out to bear the mystery of his redeeming love. It was to be touchable in their hands. It was to be hearable in their voices. It was to be visible in their persons, shining forth from them like an unearthly light. They are called to stand at the intersection of the mystery of the three-personed God and the mystery of the human being. They are sent to help you grapple with the large and essential questions of these two mysteries, and thus to help you reach your destiny.
You can help them be such bearers of mystery by asking of them the truth of Jesus Christ. If they are to answer, they will be driven to prayer in order to know him themselves. If they are to answer, they will be driven to linger over the Word of God themselves in order to share its riches with you. If they are to answer, they will be driven to reverence the sacred actions of the sacraments themselves in order to draw you into them. Their faith will light up and warm your own.
Help them to be such bearers of mystery in these February days by praying for, and with, them. That will go a long way toward helping them recover some of the wonder of their original call.

Ahora que escribo estas líneas, los sacerdotes y yo estamos a punto de comenzar una serie de conversaciones acerca de su vocación por parte de Dios. Por esto te pido que reavives la llama de la gracia que Dios te dio por la imposición de mis manos. (2 Tim 1,6) Esto es de lo que se trata, de reavivar.
Dios llamó a estos sacerdotes y los envió para ser portadores del misterio de su amor redentor. Debería ser palpable en sus manos. Debería ser oíble en sus voces. Debería ser visible en sus personas, luciendo en ellos como una luz extraterrena. Están llamados para estar en la intersección donde se encuentran el misterio del Dios Trino, y el misterio de ser humano. Son enviados para ayudarlos a luchar con las enormes y fundamentales preguntas de estos dos misterios, y así ayudarlos también a alcanzar su destino.
Ustedes les pueden ayudar a ser esta clase de portadores del misterio, preguntándoles la verdad acerca de Jesucristo. Para poder contestar, ellos serán guiados a la oración y así conocerlo ellos mismos. Para poder contestar, ellos tendrán que emplear largo tiempo con la Palabra de Dios, y así compartir con ustedes la riqueza de la Palabra. Para poder contestar, serán llevados a reverenciar ellos mismos las acciones sagradas de los sacramentos, y poder así atraerlos a ustedes. Su fe se encenderá, y compartirá su calor son ustedes.
Ayúdenlos a ser esta clase de portadores del misterio, en estos días de Febrero, orando por y con ellos. Esto será un gran avance en el camino de ayudarlos a recuperar algo de la admiración inicial de su vocación.
