‘Listen to Him’

You will find in this paper the stewardship report and audit from our last fiscal year. They will repay your careful attention. For their numbers tell a reassuring story, and they imply even more.

They imply that more and more of you are taking seriously the challenge to fill the earth and subdue it. (Genesis 1:28) They imply that more and more of you are listening as all creation groans and is in agony even until now. (Romans 8:22) They imply that more and more of you are putting the shoulders of your spirit into this continuing work of creation and re-creation.

For our faith tells us that our groaning world can be transformed from within. It can take on a different physical and moral texture. The hand of the scientist does this in a special way as she uncovers the secrets of our world. The hand of the technologist does this in a special way as he expands our control over our world. The hand of the artist does this in a special way as she reshapes her material into beauty. And the hand of the Christian does this in a more special way still as he takes up Adam’s old task to fill the earth.

But just how does this filling, reshaping, expanding, uncovering, and transforming actually work? What releases the energy? What is its fertile source? In a word, freedom. Our human freedom, responding to his divine grace, penetrates the molecules of our world, moves silently among its atoms, and begins its slow transformation.

This happens each time we freely choose to act as good stewards of the life God has given us. This happens each time we choose to act as leaven in the world God has made for us. This happens each time we choose to act as light for our dark earth and our dark time, too. Faith is the source. Hope is the fuel. Love is the energy.

Choice by choice, good deed by good deed, sacrifice by sacrifice, you are even now re-making our world. That is what our numbers say, and that is why they are reassuring. It is no wonder that all creation eagerly awaits the revelation of such sons and daughters of God, so many sources, each of them, of transforming energy. (Romans 8:19)

Encontrarán en este periódico el reporte de administración, y la auditoría de nuestro año fiscal último. Les devolverá el costo de su esmerada atención. Porque sus números cuentan una historia aseguradora, e implican aún más.

Implican que más y más de ustedes están tomando en serio el reto de llenar la tierra y someterla. (Gen 1, 28) Implican que más y más de ustedes están escuchando cómo la creación entera gime y está en agonía hasta el presente. (Rom 8, 22) Implican que más y más de ustedes están poniendo el hombro de su espíritu en continuar el trabajo de crear y recrear.

Porque nuestra fe nos dice que nuestro mundo gimiente puede ser transformado desde dentro. Puede adquirir una diferente textura física y moral. La mano del científico hace esto en forma especial conforme va descubriendo los secretos de nuestro mundo. La mano del técnico lo hace en una forma especial que expande el control sobre nuestro mundo. La mano del artista lo hace en una forma especial cuando da nueva forma a la materia y la transforma en belleza. Y la mano del Cristiano lo hace en una forma más especial cuando asume la antigua tarea de Adán de llenar la tierra.

Pero, ¿en qué forma funciona realmente este llenar, reformar, expandir, descubrir y transformar? ¿Qué es lo que desata la energía? ¿Cuál es su fuente de fertilidad? En una palabra, la libertad. Nuestra libertad humana, respondiendo a la gracia divina, penetra las moléculas de nuestro mundo, se mueve silencio-samente entre sus átomos, comienza la lenta transformación.

Esto sucede cada vez que libremente escogemos actuar como buenos administradores de la vida que Dios nos ha dado. Esto sucede cada vez que escogemos actuar como levadura en el mundo que Dios ha hecho para nosotros. Esto sucede cada vez que escogemos actuar como luz para nuestra oscura tierra y nuestro oscuro tiempo también. La fe es la fuente. La esperanza es el combustible. Amor es la energía.

Con elección tras elección, buena obra tras buena obra, sacrificio tras sacrificio, están ustedes ahora reconstruyendo nuestro mundo. Esto es lo que nuestros números dicen, y por esto son aseguradores. No es extraño que toda la creación espere ansiosamente la revelación de estos hijos e hijas de Dios, tantas fuentes, -cada uno y cada una de ellos-, de energía transformante. (Rom 8, 19)
