Now on the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. (In 2: 1) The Church led us to linger over that story recently, and to ponder the Wisdom element in it. Personified Wisdom prepared a banquet for us, inviting us to eat of his bread and to drink of his wine. To dine at Wisdom’s table and to drink of Wisdom’s wine is to accept Wisdom’s message.

There were other wisdom-figures recently who gathered for a Catechists’ Mass at the Cathedral. Because of their formation, they will go into all the corners of the Diocese now, and they will invite our children to eat of their bread and to drink of their wine.

There will be still other wisdom-figures who will mark Catholic Schools’ Week soon. These teachers and principals and pastors fan out here, there, and elsewhere in the Diocese, and they invite our children to eat of their bread and to drink of their wine.

It is a noble thing to set such a table: nothing more and nothing less than the forming consciences. Conscience is our most secret core and our sanctuary: there we are alone with God whose voice echoes in our depths. Conscience is a messenger of him who, both in nature and grace, speaks to us behind a veil and teaches and rules us by his representatives. Conscience is the aboriginal Vicar of Christ. By being faithful to Christ themselves, those who work in our religious education and those who work in our schools do something of inestimable value. Giving of their own substance, they take the plastic sensibilities of a child and help to mold them, permitting them to be remade in the Image of the Son. We are, all of us, in their debt.

Al tercer día hubo una boda en Caná de Galilea. (Jo 2,1) Recientemente, la Iglesia nos invita a gastar tiempo en esta historia, y a ponderar el contenido de Sabiduría en ella. La Sabiduría personificada nos prepara un banquete, nos invita a comer su pan y beber su vino. Comer a la mesa de la Sabiduría, y beber el vino de la Sabiduría es aceptar el Mensaje de la Sabiduría.

Ha habido otras figuras-con-sabiduría que se reunieron recientemente en la Catedral para una Misa de Catequistas. Por su formación, irán ahora a todos los rincones de la diócesis, e invitarán a nuestros niños a comer su pan y a beber su vino.

Habrá además otras figuras-con-sabiduría que marcarán la Semana de la Educación Católica pronto. Estos maestros y directores y pastores se dispersarán, aquí, allá, y por todas partes en la Diócesis, e invitarán a nuestros niños a comer de su pan y a beber de su vino.

Es algo noble preparar esta mesa: nada más ni nada menos que la formación de consciencias. La consciencia es nuestra médula más secreta, y nuestro santuario: allí estamos solos con Dios, cuya voz resuena en nuestro más profundo ser. La consciencia es un mensajero de aquel que, tanto en la naturaleza como en la gracia, nos habla tras un velo, y nos enseña y gobierna por sus representantes. La consciencia es el Vicario de Cristo aborigen. (Cardenal Newman)

Al ser fieles a Cristo ellos mismos, quienes trabajan en nuestra educación religiosa y quienes trabajan en nuestras escuelas, hacen algo de inestimable valor. Dando de su misma substancia, toman la sensibilidad plástica del niño, y ayudan a moldearlo, dándole la oportunidad de ser rehecho a Imagen del Hijo. Todos nosotros les somos deudores.
