Jeffrey Schmidt is a four-year-old who lived through the bad dream of the Greensburg tornado in May.

His mother has heard him tell people how their house was sucked up by the storm that took his toys and took his books. He keeps asking her to call the fixer man to come so they can go home again. No adult could say it better.

On Sunday, July 1, we did go home again after a fashion. We celebrated the first Mass on the St. Joseph site since the storm. The small, temporary church was over-flowing with people drawn back by a kind of magnetic pull.

We went home because the fixer man who is the Catholic Church Extension Society helped us buy the modular unit that will serve as the temporary church. They called us almost before the wind died, and they followed through with dispatch.

We went home because of the fixer man who is a veritable crowd of compassionate donors. The other dioceses of the state, Catholic Charities USA, and the individual friends from around the State and from around the country; they combined to place nearly $715,000 at our disposal to help the victims of those widespread storms over those few days in May.

We went home again because the fixer man did come. It was not quite the way Jeffrey imagined it, but home it surely was. That is why we are profoundly grateful to all the fixer men and fixer women who made it possible.

Jeffrey Schmidt es un niño de cuatro años a quien le tocó vivir la pesadilla del tornado de Greensburg, en Mayo.

Su mamá le ha oído contar a la gente la forma como su casa fue absorbida por la tormenta que se llevó sus juguetes y se llevó sus libros. Él sigue pidiéndole que llame al hombre que arregla para que venga, y ellos puedan regresar a casa. Ningún adulto lo podría decir mejor.

Volvimos a casa, porque el hombre que arregla, que es la Catholic Church Extension Society, nos ayudó a comprar la unidad modular que sirve de iglesia temporal. Nos llamaron casi antes de que el viento menguara, y siguieron todo con diligencia.

Volvimos a casa porque el hombre que arregla es una verdadera muchedumbre de de donantes compasionados.
