Bishop Plácido Rodríguez to address Stewardship Conference

The Most Rev. Plácido Rodríguez, CMF, bishop of the Diocese of Lubbock, will deliver the keynote address. He will speak at 10:45 a.m. in Spanish and at 1:15 p.m. in English.

Bishop Rodríguez was born in Celeya, Mexico and emigrated to Chicago when he was six years old. His vocation was fostered by the Claretians, who staffed the parish in his predominately Mexican-American neighborhood. He was ordained a priest for the Claretian Fathers in 1968, and in April, 1994, was named to succeed founding Bishop Michael J. Sheehan as Bishop of Lubbock. The late Archbishop Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago, a friend and colleague, once said, "Bishop Rodríguez is a man of great faith, wholly committed to the Church, a prayerful man of beautiful simplicity which should not be taken for naivete. His simplicity allows him to distinguish between essentials and non-essentials."

Different workshop sessions will be offered in English and Spanish during the dual language conference. There will be English presentations about stewardship in our Catholic schools, presented by Bob Voboril and Ann Depperschmidt, superintendents of schools for the dioceses of Wichita and Dodge City, respectively. Father Joseph Bahr, pastor of St. Dominic, Garden City and St. Stanislaus, Ingalls, will relate his story of stewardship that includes many years of parish ministry helping those in need. Servant leadership, presented by Richard Robl from Holy Cross Parish in Hutchinson, will expand upon the gifts discernment process and will offer steps to channel these gifts through leadership roles at the parish level. Dan Stremel, the Director of Finance and Stewardship, will give a stewardship update on the efforts in the diocese through the use of photo language and will discuss practical ideas to advance this important message.

Spanish presentations will be offered by Father John Fahey, C.Ss.R., Director of Hispanic Ministry, who will also discuss and update participants on the stewardship effort in the diocese. Deacon Oscar and Marta Rodriguez, St. Anthony Parish, Liberal, will once again be attending and will expand upon last year’s presentation on Stewardship in the Hispanic Community. Another stewardship perspective will be presented at the third workshop of the day and will be a testimonial of how God touches the lives of those who embrace the stewardship way of life.

Bishop Gilmore will spend time with the young adults of the diocese in attendance at the conference. The session, specifically designed for this age group, will be a dialogue about the hopes, visions, and dreams of these young adults who will help shape the ministry of the Church in the coming years. The session will be presented in both English and Spanish.

"The evaluations from last year’s conference were very positive, and I believe the 150 participants came away with a new perspective about stewardship and enjoyed the fellowship of the day," said Stremel. "We hope to build upon last year’s process and believe the conference this year will afford everyone another great opportunity to learn more about the stewardship way of life."

The conference will also include a ministry showcase with booths in the gathering area highlighting Catholic Social Services and JustFaith, the Pastoral Ministry Formation program, the Called & Gifted program, Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) and other youth opportunities, and the Crossing Cultural Boundaries Day.

Conference participants will have the opportunity to attend the keynote address and three of the workshops. Lunch and afternoon snacks are included in the $10 registration. The day begins with registration starting at 9 a.m. The conference commences at 10 a.m. with the welcome and prayer. La Conferencia Diocesana sobre Administración de Bienes (stewardship) para el 2005 tendrá lugar en Dodge City el sábado, 27 de Agosto en la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

El Muy Reverendo Plácido Rodríguez, CMF, Obispo de la Diócesis de Lubbock, hará la presentación principal. El hablará a las 10:45 a.m. en español y a la 1:15 p.m. en inglés.

El Obispo Rodríguez nació en Celeya, México e imigró a Chicago cuando tenía 6 años. Su vocación fue alentada por los Claretanos, que estaban entonces en su parroquia donde la mayoría de los vecinos eran Mexicano-Americanos. El fue ordenado sacerdote Claretano en 1968 y en Abril de 1994 fue nombrado para suceder al entonces Obispo Michael J. Sheehan como Obispo de Lubbock. El difunto Arzobispo Joseph Bernardin de Chicago, amigo y colega, dijo una vez "El Obispo Rodríguez es un hombre de gran fe, totalmente entregado a la Iglesia, un hombre de oración de una sencillez maravillosa y que no debe confundirse con ser un pardillo. Su sencillez le permite distinguir entre lo esencial y lo no esencial."

Se ofrecerán distintos talleres de trabajo en inglés y en españo durante la conferencia. Habrá presentaciones en inglés sobre la Administraciónd de Bienes en nuestras escuelas Católicas presentada por Bob Vobril y Ann Depperschmidt, Superintendentes de las escuelas de las diócesis de Wichita y de Dodge City, respectivamente. El Padre Joseph Bahr, pastor de Santo Domingo, Garden City, y San Estanislao, Ingalls, contará su historia sobre la Administración de Bienes, una historia que incluye muchos años de ayudar a los más necesitados. La Administración de Bienes en cuanto a servicio la presentará Richard Robi de la Parroquia de Holy Cross in Hutchinson, quien hablará sobre el proceso de discernimiento de los dones y ofrecerá los pasos para canalizar estos dones a través de liderazgo a nivel parroquial. Dan Stremel, Director de Finanzas y Administración de Bienes, nos pondrá al día sobre los esfuerzos en la diócesis mediante el uso del lenguaje fotográfico y desarrollará ideas prácticas para transmitir este mensaje importante.

Las presentaciones en español las hará el Padre John Fahey, C.Ss. R., Director del Ministerio Hispano, quien tratará y pondrá a los participantes al día sobre los esfuerzos que hace la Diócesis en estos temas. Los Diáconos Oscar y Marta Rodríguez de la Parroquia de San Antonio en Liberal van a estar presentes de nuevo para hablar más sobre la Administración de Bienes en la Comunidad Hispana. Otra perspectiva se presentará en el tercer taller de trabajo que será un testimonio de cómo Dios toca las vidas de aquellos que practican la Administración de Bienes como modo de vida.

El Obispo Gilmore pasará tiempo con los jovenes adultos de la Diócesis que asistan a la conferencia. La sesión, especialmente diseñada para este grupo, será un diálogo sobre las esperanzas, visiones y sueños de aquellos jovenes adultos que van a ayudar a forjar el ministerio de la Iglesia en los próximos años.

"La valoración de la conferencia del año pasado fue muy positiva y creo que los 150 participantes se fueron con una nueva perspectiva sobre la Administración de Bienes y disfrutaron del compañerismo ese día", dijo Stremel. "Esperamos construir sobre el proceso del año pasado y creemos que la conferencia de este año va a dar a todos una gran oportunidad de aprendar más sobre la Administración de Bienes como forma de vida."

La conferencia también va a incluir diversas exposiciones en la zona de encuentro resaltando los Servicios Sociales Católicos, y JustFaith, el Programa de Formación del Ministerio Pastoral, el Programa de Llamado y Dotado, Los Jovenes Encuentran a Cristo (TEC) y otras oportunidades para jovenes, así como el Día de Cruzar las Fronteras Culturales.

Los participantes a la Conferencia tendrán la oportunidad de asistir a la charla principal y a 3 de los talleres de trabajo. En la inscripción que vale $10 se incluyen el lonche y la merienda de la tarde. El día comienza con las inscripciones a las 9 a.m. La conferencia empieza a las 10 con una oración y unas palabras de bienvenida. La jornada finalizará a las 5 p.m. con la Santa Misa.
