The staff of the Catholic Care Center in Wichita recently helped Father James Kelly celebrate his 96th birthday.

According to center CEO Tom Church, "Father Kelly has been a long-standing resident of the Priest Retirement Center. The Catholic Care Center staff wanted to extend its congratulations to him.

"We’ve been commemorating his birthday each year as our senior statesmen in the PRC area," Church added. "He is 51 weeks older than Father Francis Hay, who celebrated his 95th birthday on May 22. I kid both of them that they are sort of in a contest to see who can keep going on the longest.

"We understand that no priest in either the Dodge City or Wichita diocese has lived to be 100, so our response after singing Happy Birthday to Father Kelly was, ‘Four more years.’"

Church said that "the tradition is for the priest to provide wine for the others on his birthday, which Father Kelly did, and we enjoyed a fine noon meal together with his fellow priests congratulating him.

"As Father Kelly takes no medicine, I would add, ‘A cheerful countenance doeth good like a medicine,’ has kept him healthy all these years."
