Father Wesley Schawe presented Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei medals to those young scouts who had completed the requirements for each award.

The Light of Christ medal is presented in special recognition to a cub scout for advancement in religious knowledge and spiritual growth. The program deals primarily with the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and the Eucharist.

Light of Christ recipients were: R.J. Cooper, Cody Elwell, Tadyn Falcon, Brian Groth, Chance Hertel, Alec Koehn, Brandon Roy, Christopher Temaat, Cole Trent, Logan Waldman, Gideon Wells, and Noah Williams.

The Parvuli Dei medal (Latin for Children of God), also recognizes a cub scout for advancement in religious knowledge and spiritual growth. The purpose of the program is to help young boys explore a wide range of activities in order to discover the presence of God in their daily lives as members of their families and parish.

Parvuli Dei recipients were: Trevor Brock, Landon Blackburn, Nick Schnitker and Michael Zuniga.

Dave Geist, chairman of the Catholic Committee on Scouting presented the Bronze Pelican award to Tim Wenzl, religious emblems coordinator. This award recognizes the contribution of adults who serve boy scouting organizations on the parish level. The pelican is a Christian symbol for someone who nurtures the young.

Wenzl has been religious emblems coordinator for the pack for four years. During this time nearly 40 religious emblems were earned by scouts in the pack. He established the scout Rosary Hour in the parish, which has provided the opportunity for many scouts to earn Rosary patches. He was also instrumental in the development of the Year of the Eucharist patch which was earned by more than 2,600 scouts across the country.

Geist also presented Cub Pack 162 a certificate from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, in recognition of being a 2005 Gold Medallion Unit National Finalist. The Gold Medallion Award program recognizes the outstanding Catholic Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, and Venturing Crew in each of the 14 Episcopal Regions of the United States. National Gold Medallion winners epitomize those units that excel at providing youth with quality programs including religious activities, religious emblems participation, outdoor activities, and special events that encompass the religious, vocational, and educational aspects of Scouting under Catholic auspices. Cub Pack 162 was first runner up in Region 9 which includes all the cub packs in the 15 dioceses in Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas.

Boy and Girls Scouts honored at annual Quest Weekend in Dodge City

Special to the Register

The annual Quest Weekend was held on the campus of Dodge City Community College Feb. 17-19. The theme was "Dare to Live Out Loud." Thirteen Girl Scouts and 29 Boy Scouts participated in the activities.

The scouts attending Quest 2006 used the weekend to work toward requirements for religious emblems and medals. Some youths begin work on the requirements at one Quest weekend, work on service projects and other requirements throughout the year, and complete the program the following year at Quest. The award programs cannot be completed in a weekend.

Nicole Rome, of St. Nicholas of Myra Parish in Hays, received the Spirit Alive medal and the Year of the Eucharist patch. The Spirit Alive religious emblem program is designed to assist young women in senior high school discover how the Holy Spirit moves within and through their lives, calling them to greater participation in church ministry. Through exploration of Scripture and the reading of church documents, combined with the development of a stronger prayer life, this program helps young Catholic women better understand their own mission as a disciple of Jesus.

Six young men were awarded the "Ad Altare Dei" emblem. This program is designed to equip Boy Scouts in the seventh grade through high school to take their place in the world as maturing Catholics. The scout lives and applies the things he believes to his daily life and gains a deeper understanding of what it means to be a follower and disciple of Christ. The scout discovers that through the sacraments, he becomes a maturing disciple of Christ.

Seven young men were awarded the St. Pius XII emblem. This program reflects the ideal of a youth’s growing concern with the world of God as well as the human world. It recognizes the need for Catholic lay leadership in the church and community affairs and of scouting’s potential in developing such leadership. The program helps form young adults in Christ with a desire for serious commitments to action and geared to their role as Christians.
