Despite the many variations it has undergone from different cultures, different social structures, and different spiritual attitudes, marriage is not a purely human institution. The vocation to marriage is written in the very nature of man and woman as they came from the hand of the Creator ... God himself is the author of marriage. (OS 48, I) That is the simple truth of it.

But sin has darkened this original intention and has damaged this original communion. Psalm 36 has these melancholy lines:

Sin speaks to the sinner

In the depths of his heart.

There is no fear of God

Before his eyes.

He so flatters himself in his mind

That he knows not his guilt.

In his mouth are mischief and deceit.

All wisdom is gone.

There is mischief, there is deceit, in the mouths of our land. The revealed purpose of marriage (a partnership for the whole of life ordained by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children) is being obscured by those who flatter themselves in their minds. The most outrageous, the most untruthful things are being claimed. All wisdom, it sometimes seems, is gone.

Not quite all, though. Our elected officials recently did their duty in Topeka to protect marriage. They gave us a chance to vote on a constitutional amendment that will buttress our already existing defense of marriage law. The amendment may not be perfect, but it should check the erratic movements of our courts.

They did their duty, and now we must do ours. The vote will be held on 5 April 2005. If you are not registered, you must do so by 21 March 2005. If you are registered, you must turn out to vote in the April election. In that way you will be defending this community of life and love so essential to the persons involved and to all of us in our human and Christian society.

Apesar de las muchas variaciones que ha sufrido debido a distintas culturas, distintas estructuras sociales y distintas atitudes espirituales, el matrimonio no es una institución puramente humana. La vocación al matrimonio está escrita en la misma naturaleza del hombre y de la mujer, venidos de la mano del Creador... Dios mismo es el autor del matrimonio (OS 48,1). Esa es la sencilla verdad.

Pero el pecado ha oscurecido la intención original y ha dañado esta comunión original. El Salmo 36 dice estas líneas melancólicas:

El pecado habla al impío

en el fondo de su corazón

No hay temor de Dios

ante sus ojos.

Se mira con tan buen concepto

que se niega a admitir su culpa

En su boca están la maldad y la decepción

Renuncia a ser sensato, a obrar el bien.

Hay maldad, hay decepción en las bocas de nuestro pueblo. El fin revelado del matrimonio (ser socios durante toda la vida ordenada por su naturaleza para el bien de los esposos y la procreación y educación de los hijos) está siendo oscurecida por aquellos que se halagan a si mismos en sus mentes. Ellos reclaman las cosas más descaradas, más mentirosas. Toda sabiduría parece, muchas veces, haber desaparecido.

Sin embargo, no todo. Nuestros oficiales recientemente hicieron su trabajo en Topeka para proteger el matrimonio. Nos dieron una oportunidad de votar una enmienda constitucional que fortalezca nuestra ya existente defensa de la ley del matrimonio. La enmienda puede que no sea perfecta, pero debe frenar los movimientos erraticos en nuestras cortes.

Ellos hicieron su deber. Ahora nosostros debemos hacer la nuestra. La votación tendrá lugar el 5 de Abril del 2005. Si aún no está registrado, debe hacerlo antes del 21 de Marzo. Si ya está registrado, debe votar en las elecciones de Abril. De esa forma, usted estará defendiendo la comunidad de vida y amor tan esencial para las personas involucradas y para todos nosotros en nuestra sociedad humana y Cristiana.
