Some of you may remember that this column takes its name from the story of the Transfiguration: This is my beloved Son, listen to him. He is the full and final answer to our every question. But where does Jesus speak today?

He speaks to us through our conscience, of course. Conscience is a person’s most secret core and his sanctuary. There she is alone with God whose voice echoes in her depths. But conscience is not enough on its own. It is easy to make it say what we want to hear.

And so we must remember that he speaks to us also through the Gospel. The stories of what Jesus said and did, told and retold for 2000 years: these memories are the principal place in which Jesus speaks to us today. They thus illuminate our own myopic consciences. But not even the Gospel is enough on its own. For we know from sad experience that the words of the Gospel can also be interpreted in different ways.

And so we must remember that he speaks to us also through the Church. It is the Church, instituted by Christ for this very purpose, which assures us of an authentic interpretation of what Jesus said and did: he who hears you hears me. Because of this it is important to steep ourselves in the teaching of the Church, to know it firsthand in all its parts, to know it as the Church herself understands and proposes it.

When Conscience, and Gospel, and Church come together, when they merge and blend, then we can listen to him with assurance. Then we can know him as the Answer. Then we can find the full Truth that will set us free.

Algunos de ustedes quizá recuerden que esta columna toma su nombre de la historia de la Transfiguración: Éste es mi Hijo amado, escúchenlo. Él es la respuesta final y completa a todas nuestras preguntas. Pero, ¿dónde habla Jesús hoy?

Él nos habla por medio de nuestra conciencia, desde luego. La conciencia es el más secreto interior de la persona, y su santuario. Ahí la persona está sola con Dios, cuya voz hace eco en lo más profundo de ella. Pero la conciencia no basta por sí misma. Es fácil hacerla decir lo que deseamos oír.

Y por esto, debemos también recordar que nos habla igualmente por el Evangelio. Las historias de lo que Jesús dijo e hizo, contadas y vueltas a contar durante 2000 años: Estas memorias son el sitio principal en el que Jesús nos habla hoy. En esta forma iluminan ellas nuestras miopes conciencias. Pero ni siquiera el Evangelio es suficiente por sí mismo. Porque sabemos, por triste experiencia que las palabras mismas del Evangelio pueden ser interpretadas en diferentes formas.

Y por esto, debemos recordar que nos habla también por medio de la Iglesia. Es la Iglesia, instituida por Cristo con esta intención, la que nos asegura una auténtica interpretación de lo que Jesús dijo e hizo: quien los oye a ustedes, me oye a mí. Por esto, es importante empaparnos de la enseñanza de la Iglesia, para conocerla de primera mano en todas sus partes, para conocerla como la Iglesia misma la entiende y la propone.

Cuando la Conciencia, el Evangelio, y la Iglesia vienen juntos, cuando surgen y se mezclan, entonces podemos escucharlo a Él con seguridad. Entonces podemos conocerlo como la Respuesta. Entonces podremos encontrar la Verdad total que nos hará libres.
