More than 200 blessed while on the road to becoming Catholic

More than 200 men, women and children on the road to becoming Catholic were officially recognized March 5 by Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore at the Rite of Election.

With their families, godparents, and sponsors in tow, the catechumens and candidates sat in sections reserved for their parishes and awaited their turn at being called and then greeted by a grateful Bishop Gilmore.

Speaking in English and then Spanish, Bishop Gilmore spoke about conversion.

"St. Ambrose, one of the great bishops of our past, once said, ‘There is water and there are tears: the water of Baptism and the tears of repentance.’

"...Jesus was about conversion. This call was at the heart of his proclamation of the Kingdom. Jesus continues to be about conversion. For him, that meant a conversion of heart, above all, a deep inner conversion. This is a radical reordering of the way you think, the way you judge, the way you act. This is allowing the Lord’s ways to become your ways.

"...The call to conversion does not stop with Baptism. It continues to sound and to resound in the lives of Christians.

"...You are promising the Lord something today. You are promising those who work with you something today. You are promising me and all in the Church something today. By your words and your actions here, you are telling us that yours will be a life marked by water and by tears. You are telling us that you will pursue an interior conversion all your earthly days. Be men of your promise. Be women of your word."

Following his homily, Bishop Gilmore addressed the godparents and sponsors, after which the candidates and catechumens -- one parish at a time -- came forward to be greeted by Bishop Gilmore.

"The Church recognizes your desire to be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and to have a place at Christ’s eucharistic table," the bishop said as part of the official rite. "Join with us this Lent in a spirit of repentance. Hear the Lord’s call to conversion and be faithful to your baptismal covenant."

Candidates are baptized members of another Christian denomination -- or baptized Catholics -- who are seeking confirmation and Eucharist. Catechumens are individuals who have not been baptized and who are seeking baptism, confirmation and Eucharist.

At the Easter Vigil, candidates will receive the other two sacraments of Christian initiation, while catechumens receive the sacrament of baptism as well.
