‘Humble thyself’

Recently, I have spoken frequently about how busy my life has been, how busy other’s lives have been and how busy our young people are. Of course none of this has changed, as I with many others, just finished conducting our last TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) weekend, March 19 - 21. Actually, it was a minor milestone for us. We began our TEC movement in October of 1997, and since then we have faced some beautiful times as well as some down times, but last weekend we celebrated TEC #25. And what a beautiful encounter with Christ it was. Now the push is to get ready for our annual high school youth rally, next weekend.

As I was preparing for the TEC weekend, I came across some reflections and music that has been used on previous TEC weekends. One of the songs was "Humble Thyself," a very simple song that is sung with an echo, as the main chorus is "Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord." As I thought about this, I was drawn to the last several months of my ministry, and how in many ways my ego has gotten in the way, and I have truly failed to humble myself. But God has a special way of giving us this gentle nudge, and re-centering us.

As I continued thinking about this, I thought that we had really chosen a wonderful weekend to have a TEC, as TEC is centered on the Paschal Mystery. What better time to hold a TEC than on Palm Sunday, and enter into Holy Week in this special way. Great planning for us, but not so much for meeting other needs of the weekend. You see there is a major role of priests on a TEC weekend, ranging from a spiritual director, to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Masses, plus the fact that we are using parish space at St. Dominic’s. I quickly came to realize that I truly do not understand the meaning of the word humble. But the priests of our diocese do. For this TEC weekend, so many of our pastors have made great sacrifices above and beyond the many sacrifices they are already making during this most holy time of year. They willingly have given in many special ways, not once complaining, but truly sacrificing so that our young people could have this special encounter with our Risen Lord.

As I worked this TEC weekend, I again was reminded of the many gifts our young people bring to this wonderful Church of ours, and I again was able to reinforce my dedication to my ministry. But more importantly, I want to thank our clergy for all that they continue to do for so many. I invite and encourage you to also extend your gratitude to your pastor for all that he continues to do. All of our priests exemplify the meaning of the word "Humble." We truly are blessed.

As we celebrate this most joyous Easter Season, may we continue to help our young people look to the risen Lord, finding new ways to Humble Thyself, giving appreciation to all of God’s gifts.
