Birthline’s dream answered, but help needed to make it complete

LIBERAL -- Since Birthline, a crisis pregnancy center, opened in May 1995, they have dreamed of owning their own place.

In 2002, after seven years at 1404 N. Western, they were forced to move by a physician who wanted to expand the office next to them.

Birthline’s search for affordable rent led them to a windowless basement office at 412 N. Washington. Cozy, but longing for natural light, they now believe they have finally found an ideal space.

They have a contract to purchase a former dentist’s office at Second and Clay. It seems to be everything they have been searching for the last 13 years. The building, built in 1963, was where dentist, Dr. Howard Cummins, practiced for many years. He has since retired and relocated to Texas.

Birthline is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women with an unplanned pregnancy. Staffed solely by volunteers, they provide a free pregnancy test and present women with the positive options of parenting or adoption. They help them understand the negative physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences of abortion.

Birthline promotes sexual abstinence before marriage and fidelity after marriage. Also, they can give mothers new and used baby items, as well as diapers and formula.

“There are children living, laughing, loving and being loved in our area because someone at Birthline encouraged a pregnant woman when she needed it most,” said volunteer Liz McMullen. In fact, McMullen and her husband, Brian, adopted one of these precious gifts from God. Her name is Margaret and she turned 5 in November.

McMullen is hoping that when they sign off on the building at the end of March, they will be able to pay the purchase price in full.

“We want to pay it off when we close,” she said. “Birthline can’t afford a mortgage along with the cost of utilities and insurance.”

To do so will require a few generous souls.

“If you have ever loved an unplanned child, or if you believe like we do that all children should be welcomed in life, would you consider making a donation toward the purchase of this building for all pregnant women who need the love, encouragement, and support we offer?” she asked. “Thank you and God bless you.”

Donations may be sent to 412 N. Washington, Liberal, KS 67901. Checks should be made out to Birthline.
