The CATHOLIC DIOCESE of DODGE CITY

Serving the People of Southwest Kansas

Rite of Election

Dozens of men, women and children on the road to becoming Catholic were officially recognized Feb. 29 by Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore at the Rite of Election.

With their families, godparents, and sponsors in tow, more than 100 catechumens and candidates sat in sections reserved for their parishes and awaited their turn at being called and then greeted by a grateful Bishop Gilmore.

Speaking in English and then Spanish, Bishop Gilmore spoke of Lent, and Christ’s 40 days in the desert following his baptism.

"His story is your story," he told those gathered. "You too have heard a voice that brings you now to the very threshold of the Church."

Following his homily, Bishop Gilmore addressed the godparents and sponsors, after which the candidates and catechumens -- one parish at a time -- came forward to be greeted by Bishop Gilmore.

"The Church recognizes your desire to be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and to have a place at Christ’s eucharistic table," the bishop said as part of the official rite. "Join with us this Lent in a spirit of repentance. Hear the Lord’s call to conversion and be faithful to your baptismal covenant."
