‘Listen to Him’
By the Most Rev. Ronald M. Gilmore
Bishop of
You will be able to read a column by
Archbishop Naumann in today’s paper. It
is a melancholy tale.
Here you have two persons trying to talk
with one another, trying to get inside the mind and heart of one another, but
to no avail.
The archbishop is trying to be faithful to
what he has seen and heard of Jesus Christ, and to proclaim it in season and
out. In personal meeting after personal
meeting, in letter after letter, he tried to guide the governor into the inner
meaning of the Church’s teaching on the right to life.
The governor is trying to be faithful to
her lights, to the law as she understands it, to the ethos of her party, and to
the demands of her constituents. In
doing so, she does not seem to grasp his concern for her spiritual welfare, and
his concern for the scandal she is causing.
The archbishop and the governor: Their
melancholy tale reminds us again just how difficult the art of communication
is.
We other bishops of the state have walked
this journey with them, and have prayed and fasted for them. To no avail, so far to no
avail.
Please pray for the archbishop and for the
governor. Grace can never lose its power
to surprise.

Ustedes
