Obituaries

Henry L. Lichter, 82, of St. Ann Parish, Omitz, died April 27, 2007. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2100. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include two brothers, Alvin and Marvin; and two sisters, Rosemary Linn and Mary Evelyn Linenberger. Father Ultan Murphy presided.

Sharon L. Clemons, 46, of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Dodge City, died in rural Finney County. She had worked for the city of Dodge City, and Big A Auto Parts. Survivors include her mother, Flora C. Schmidt Ricke; her husband, Ray Clemons; a son, Seth Gingerich; a daughter, Sheena Gingerich; four brothers, Allan Ricke, Gary Ricke, Cletus Ricke, and Myron Ricke; four sisters, Ellen Olivier, Dianne Durler, Kay Herrmann, and Annette Burkhart; and two grandchildren. Edwin “Ed” Bruce MacBride, 82, of Spearville, died April 28, 2007. He was a purchasing agent for the federal government. He is survived by his wife, Helen Kropp; a son, Bruce; two daughters, Elizabeth Berlin and Bridget Jetnzsch; three stepsons, Dennis Hernandez, David Hernandez, and Tim Hernandez; three stepdaughters, Bridget Anderson, Peggy Schulte, and Stephanie Hernandez; a granddaughter; two great-granddaughters; 16 step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren. Father John Maes and Deacon Dwaine Lampe presided.

John G. Schaffer, 85, of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Dodge City, died April 30, 2007. He was a farmer and stockman in Ford, Gray and Hodgeman counties. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the Battle of the Bulge and the European Theatre. He is survived by his wife, Mary B. Carmichael; three sons, Philip, Ronald, and Tom; a daughter, Mary Ruth Newell; three brothers, Harold, Earl and Danny; two sisters, Irene Wade and Gertruden Koehn; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Father Ted Skalsky presided.

Louis Manuel Mendoza, 67, of St. Mary’s Parish, Garden City, died April 30, 2007. He was a retired director of building maintenance. He is survived by his wife, Rose M. Ramirez; a daughter, Rowena “Tina” Hogan; two sisters, Lydia Gonzales and Alice Cruz; and a granddaughter. Father Gilbert Herrman presided.

James D. Whisennand, 62, of St. Joan of Arc Parish, Elkhart, died May 1, 2007. He owned and operated J & J Oilfield Services for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Strothman; a daughter, Tammie Elsen; three brothers, Joseph, Jon, and Jack; a sister, Maxine; and two grandson’s. Father Francis Khoi Nguyen presided.

Della Rae Hoffman, 50, of St. Anthony Parish, Lakin, died May 1, 2007, in Lakin. She worked at Kearney County Hospital in Lakin, first as a nurses’ aide and later as a registered nurse. Survivors include two daughters, Angela D. Hoffman and Ashley E. Hoffman; her mother and stepfather, Delliah and Charles Vincent; two brothers, Carl W. Barchet III and Bryant J. Barchet; a sister, Mary T. Barchet Jones; a stepbrother, Dale Vincent; and a grandchild. Father Mike Helms presided.

Arthur L. “Jack” Bailey, 85, of Prince of Peace Parish in Great Bend, died May 2, 2007. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U. S. Army Air Corps. He is survived by his wife, Katherine J. Hudran; five sons, Lawrence Michael, Rodney Raymond Bailey, Anthony Wayne, Donald Lee Bailey, and Kevin James; three daughters, Marilyn Ann Petty, Alice Marie Neidhart, and Dianna Kay Allison; three brothers, George Bailey, Beverly “BD” Bailey, and Jerry Lee Bailey; two sisters, Lois McMullen and Norma Jean Burk; and eight grandchildren. Father Wesley Schawe presided.

Ernest Frank Churchill, 76, of St. Anthony Parish, Ellinwood, died May 3, 2007. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1960. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Doris Carlson; six step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. Father John Fahey-Guerra presided.

Alphons E “Jr.” Voss, 68, of Sacred Heart Parish, Pratt, died May 4, 2007. He was a truck driver and a farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran and third degree Knights of Columbus member. He is survived by his wife, Connie L. Reif; two sons, Jeff and Jim; a daughter, Susan Weissbeck; three brothers, Lawrence, Ralph, and Harold; four sisters, Doris Atchison, Marilyn Boyter, Joyce Korth, and Jen Lackey; six grandchildren, Mandy Wilson, Jessica Voss, Stephanie Voss, Grant Weissbeck, Rachel Tillman, and Jay Wittig; and a great grandson, Parker Wilson. Father Gregory S. LeBlanc presided.

Beatrice Elizabeth Jacobs, 91, of St. Joseph Parish, Ashland, died May 6, 2007. She was a member of the St. Joseph Alter Society. Survivors include a son, Patrick Joseph; a daughter, Martha Marie Crane; a sister, Mildred; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Father Maurice Cummings and Deacon Dwayne Lampe presided.

Helen I. Adams, 95, of Sacred Heart Parish, Larned, died May 8, 2007. She was a member of the Alter Society and the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Todd, Carol Douglas Knudsen, and Mary Smith; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Father Bernard Felix presided.

Joe L. Konecny, 80, of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Dodge City, died May 10, 2007. He was a farmer in rural Dodge City and also near Ensign for many years. He served in the U.S. Army serving in Korea. He is survived by his wife, Norma Lee Reinert; four sons, Rocky, Mick, Kevin, and Rick; two daughters, Joni Bunnell and Kathy Collins; two brothers, Sylvester and Eugene; three sisters, Dee Lucas, Rita Behrendt, and Marcella Meyers; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
