‘Listen to Him’

One of the joys of being a Bishop is found in the many remarkable persons I meet each month. The Lord takes delight in his people, the psalmist said, and so do I.

Take the young man I met not so long ago in the sacramental moment of Confirmation. On his retreat, he was given the time to think and ask myself what I feel and think the Lord wants me to do, he said. From all appearances, he used that time very well. I learned that there is something special he has planned for me to do, but I don’t really know what that is. Very well, indeed.

He is a good model for all you young persons approaching the end of your grade school or high school careers. As graduation draws near, you will have no end of people advising you on what to make of your lives: parents, teachers, coaches, counselors, pastors, sometimes a stray Bishop even. But you will never make a fully realistic decision if you leave out the One from whom you came, and the One to whom you are going: what does the Lord want me to do?

My young friend went on to say: So I am confused and wonder if I will be ready and willing to do as He tells me. Now is the time for him to think such thoughts. Now is the time for you to think such thoughts. More important still, now is the time for all of you to pray such thoughts.

There is something God has planned for me, my new friend continued. I just hope I hear his voice and do exactly as he wills me to do. For his sake, I hope so too. For your sake, I hope so too. Do as Mary did in this month of May: she treasured all these things and reflected on them in her heart. (Luke 2:19)

Uno de los gozos de ser Obispo está en el número de personas notables que puedo tratar cada mes. El Señor se goza en su gente, dice el salmista, y otro tanto puedo hacer yo.

Es el caso del joven que conocí no hace mucho tiempo en el momento sacramental de la Confirmación. En su retiro, se le dio tiempo para pensar y preguntarme qué es lo que siento y pienso que el Señor quiere que yo haga, dijo. Por lo que parece, empleó el tiempo muy bien. Aprendí que hay algo especial que él ha planeado que yo haga, pero realmente no sé qué es eso. Muy bien, de veras.

Él es un buen modelo para todos ustedes jóvenes que se acercan al término de su escuela intermedia, o de su high school. Al aproximarse la graduación, tendrán un sin fin de personas que les aconsejan lo que deben hacer de sus vidas: papás, maestros, entrenadores, consejeros, párrocos, y algunas veces hasta algún Obispo descarriado. Pero nunca lograrán una decisión verdaderamente realista, si dejan fuera al Único de quien ustedes vienen, al Único hacia quien deberán ir: ¿Qué es lo que el Señor quiere que haga?

Mi joven amigo continuó diciendo: Por esto, estoy confundido, y me pregunto si estaré listo y deseoso de hacer lo que Él me diga. Este es el tiempo para tener estos pensamientos. Más importante todavía, éste es el tiempo de que todos ustedes oren estos pensamientos.

Hay algo que Dios ha planeado para mí, continuó mi nuevo amigo. Yo simplemente espero oír su voz y hacer exactamente lo que él quiera que haga. Por su bien, yo también lo espero. Por el bien de ustedes, yo también lo espero. Hagan como hizo María en este mes de mayo: ella atesoraba todas estas cosas, y las reflexionaba en su corazón. (Lu 2,19)
