Deacon Erasmo Rodriguez resigns as

Spiritual Director of Cursillo Movement

The great-grandfather of seven stressed that while he’s stepping away from the Cursillo Movement, he’s not retiring as a deacon, because once you’re a deacon he said with a smile, "you’re a deacon forever."

Deacon Rodriguez will continue to man his office at the cathedral where he helps mostly Hispanic individuals and couples tend to baptisms, marriages, and funerals. And parishioners will continue to see his head pop up behind the cathedral lectern to read the Gospel, or behind the altar to help celebrate Mass.

As Spiritual Director of the Cursillo Movement, Deacon Rodriguez has been directly responsible for the success of four, three-day Cursillo experiences each year, two for men and two for women. Each typically have 40-50 people registered, a number of which Deacon Rodriguez is very proud.

"We’ve had great success here," he said. "Cursillo is a method, really. It is a kind of method of conversion.

"That’s what I enjoyed the most," he added, "seeing the change in the people that occurs between when they came in and when they went out."

The Cursillo Movement approaches "evangelization as a very natural act of being Christlike within each of our daily activities," according to a National Cursillo Movement spokesperson. "We realize that while most people would like to live their lives in a Christ-like manner, the pressures of the world often make this difficult. The Cursillo Movement provides a method and a technique to provide each of us with the tools, the mentality, the strength, and the support to make this natural type of evangelization possible."

As a follow up to Cursillo, participants attend "small group reunions" that are comprised of four to six people, and which take place for about an hour each week, indefinitely. They are one of the most important aspects of the Cursillo experience.

"At the reunions they share what they have done, and can see the weakness and strengths of the people around them," Deacon Rodriguez said. "That’s the reason they have the reunions, to support each other and keep advancing spiritually."

While Cursillos are held in English and Spanish across the country, southwest Kansas unfortunately has not garnered enough interest in the English-speaking community to justify holding an English language Cursillo. This is something that Deacon Rodiguez hopes will eventually change.

Deacon Rodriguez was born near Waco, Tex., and has lived in southwest Kansas for 29 years. He has served as a deacon for just over 20 years, overseeing various ministries. He and his wife, Olga, have six children, 14 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

"I enjoyed the time I was spiritual director," he said. "I loved the ministry and love the Cursillo and wish them the best."

Taking over the position of spiritual director is Father John Fahey-Guerra, C.Ss.R., of Liberal, part of the Redemptorist Hispanic Missionary Team.

"They do a really good job here with the weekend Cursillos," Father Fahey-Guerra said. "The participants feel really cared about. That’s one of the great things about Erasmo’s job, it created such a loving environment for sharing the Gospel message.

"I’m really grateful for his work and have a lot of respect for him. He’s done a lot of good for a lot of people."

Bishop Ronald Gilmore also had kind words for Deacon Rodriguez, which are included in his column on pages 1 and 11.

"He has served well and honorably in a host of assignments since his ordination in 1983," Bishop Gilmore wrote. "Before I came here, Bishop Gerber told me that the diocese had something special in Erasmo. It has been my privilege to learn that personally during the past six years."

El bisabuelo de siete, aclara que aunque se retira del MCC, no se retira de su ministerio como Diácono Permanente de esta Diócesis, porque una ves que se es ordenado; aclara con una sonrisa, "se es Diácono por siempre".

Diácono Rodríguez continuará atendiendo su oficina en esta Catedral, donde ayuda a los parroquianos de ella, principalmente a la gente hispana, individual y en parejas en la preparación de los sacramentos: Bautismo, Matrimonio, y funerales. Y los parroquianos continuarán viendo su cabeza surgir detrás del Ambón de la Catedral para leer el Evangelio, o atrás del Altar para ayudar en la celebración de la misa.

Como Director Espiritual del MCC, el Diácono Rodríguez ha sido directamente responsable por el éxito de cuatro, Cursillos de tres- días por año, dos de hombres y dos de mujeres. Cada uno por lo regular incluye un promedio de 40-50 personas, número del cual El se siente muy orgulloso.

"Hemos tenido un gran éxito aquí", nos dice, "El Cursillo es como un método, en realidad es un gran método de conversión". "Es eso lo que me entusiasmaba más" agrega, "Ver el cambio que en la gente ocurría de el momento en que llegaban, y el de partida".

Como medio de seguimiento para el MCC, sus participantes atienden "reuniones de grupos" semanales, compuestas por 3-6 personas, y que tiene una duración de una hora mas o menos, indefinidamente, aparte del proceso de conversión estas reuniones ocupan un aspecto muy importante en la experiencia del Cursillo.

"En dichas reuniones se comparte lo que se ha hecho en esa semana, y así pueden ver sus debilidades y sus puntos fuertes en su caminar en la persona y en los demás miembros de el grupo", Diácono Erasmo nos dice. "Es esta la principal razón de reunirse, el de brindarse uno al otro su apoyo y seguir avanzando espiritualmente".

Diácono Rodríguez, nació cerca de Waco, TX. , y ha vivido en el suroeste de Kansas por 29 años. Ha servido como Diácono en varios ministerios por 20 años. El y su esposa Olga, tienen 6 hijos, 14 nietos, y 7 bisnietos.

"Disfruté el tiempo que fuí Director Espiritual. Amé mi ministerio, y amo el Cursillo, al cuál le deseo solo lo mejor".

Como nuevo Director Espiritual del MCC ha sido nombrado El padre Juan Fahey-Guerra C.Ss.R., parte del equipo de misioneros Redentoristas.

"Hacen muy buen trabajo aquí con el Cursillo", dijo el padre Fahey-Guerra. "Los participantes sienten en realidad que son importantes y atendidos", esto es una parte grande del trabajo de Erasmo, crear ese ambiente de amor y compartimiento al mensaje del Evangelio. "Estoy muy agradecido por su trabajo, y a El le tengo un gran respeto, ha hecho mucho bien a mucha gente".

El Obispo Ronald Gilmore también tiene palabras de agradecimiento para el Diácono Erasmo, las cuales están incluidas en su columna.

"El ha servido bien y honorablemente en varias asignaciones desde su ordenación, en 1983", el Obispo Gilmore escribe. "Antes de venir aquí el Obispo Gerber me dijo que esta diócesis tenia alguien especial en Erasmo. Y ha sido mi privilegio el conocerle personalmente durante los pasados seis años".
