At the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge
City, religious education has become a family affair. Nearly 400 people —
from Kindergartners to senior citizens — gathered recently for
"Generations of Faith," a program that draws together families in an
informal atmosphere for dinner and religious education.
Volunteer organizer Anne Shaughnessy was one of several
people who attended a special workshop in Kansas City last March to become
trained to present the program.
"Last January the parish started looking at ways to do
religious education differently," she said. "Each month we offer one topic
four times. Anybody can come to any program; you sign up by the month. The
program replaces the parishes PSR program."
She also said that, for the children, the classes are
"part of the Confirmation and First Communion preparation programs."
After dinner, the different age groups separate for
their various lessons. The program is presented on one Saturday, one
Sunday, and two Wednesdays each month. After the English Mass on Saturday
is an English program, after the Sunday Spanish Mass is a Spanish program,
and on Wednesdays both language groups join together for dinner before
separating for lessons presented in English or Spanish.
The best part of the program? "Bringing the entire
family together to learn about and share in our faith," Shaughnessy said.
