‘Listen to Him’

A group of prominent Catholics in Missouri felt called upon to respond to what it called misinformation, scare tactics, and distortions being spread by the opponents of the initiative to enshrine in the state constitution the right to clone human beings. In this they parted company from their bishops, and from what the Church has always taught.

In the anonymous letter to Diognetus from 125 AD, for example, we read: Christians marry, as do all others; they have children; but they do not destroy their offspring. We have always believed in that fundamental respect for life. We shall always believe it.

The harvesting of embryonic stem cells kills a living human embryo. The Church has always opposed the direct destruction of innocent human life for any purpose, including that of research.

Now that the initiative has passed in Missouri, a similar effort will be made in Kansas. The mechanism is already in place, as is the money. So I ask you to familiarize yourselves with this question and to prepare yourselves to be good and faithful witnesses to the faith in the coming legislative battles.

The special section in this week’s paper from Mr. Joe Bollig is an excellent introduction to the subject. I invite you to read it, to study it, to ponder it, and to save it for future reference. We never go wrong when we act in defense of human dignity and of human life.

Un grupo de prominentes católicos de Missouri se sintió llamado a responder a lo que llamó información equivocada, tácticas amenazantes, y distorciones difundidas por los opositores de la iniciativa de introducir protegido, en la constitución del estado, el derecho a clonar seres humanos. En esto, se separaron de sus obispos, y de lo que la Iglesia siempre ha enseñado.

En la carta anónima a Diogeneto, del año 125 de la era cristiana, por ejemplo, leemos: los Cristianos se casan, como lo hacen otros; tienen hijos; pero no destruyen a sus descendientes. Siempre hemos creído en el respeto fundamental a la vida. Nosotros debemos siempre creer esto.

Recolectar células raíz del embrión mata a un embrión humano vivo. La Iglesia se ha opuesto siempre a la destrucción directa de una vida inocente humana, cualquiera que sea la finalidad, incluida la investigación.

Ahora que la iniciativa ha pasado en Missouri, se hará un esfuerzo similar en Kansas. El mecanismo ya está en su sitio, así como el dinero. Por esto, les pido que se familiaricen con este asunto, y se preparen para ser buenos y fieles testigos de la Fe, en la próximas batallas legislativas.
