Nationally renowned musicians Barbara and Ken Mervine shared both their talent and their knowledge of liturgical music Oct. 29 when they led dozens of people through the annual Music Ministers’ Day workshop at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Together, the Mervines are Directors of Music at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Denver. Ken is also organist with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Temple Emanuel. They regularly present programs and workshops for large liturgical gatherings, as well as the American Guild of Organists regional and national conventions.

Despite nursing a cold, Barbara Mervine was able to not only share lessons during a break-out session for those interested in the vocal aspects of liturgical music, but she presented several songs for the group.

Ken Mervine performed masterfully at the cathedral organ, both during the workshop, and at the 10 a.m. Mass earlier that morning. He later shared his knowledge during a breakout session for those interested in the keyboard aspect of liturgical music.

"I thought the workshop went very well," said Jetmore resident Mary Jane Goebel, who organized the event. "It seemed like everyone who came really enjoyed themselves, and left feeling really renewed and energized. They really appreciated the instructions and information that Barbara and Ken Mervine gave them about liturgists and how to implement these things and kind of hone up their skills as cantors and as organists. It seemed like it was a really nice day."
