Dozens of Catholics from across the diocese attended a special Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe Oct. 30 that officially marked the end of the "Year of the Eucharist" for the Diocese of Dodge City.

Similar services have been held across the country as the year drew to a close in October.

Pope John Paul II declared the churchwide Year of the Eucharist beginning in October 2004 and ending in October 2005 with a world Synod of Bishops meeting in Rome to discuss the centrality of the Eucharist in Catholic life.

In his homily, Bishop Ronald Gilmore admonished those gathered: "Don’t ever lie."

"…When you come forth for communion, you are acting out physically what you profess to believe mentally," he said. "…Everything about you makes an act of faith, and it is out there, in a public setting, for all to see. You are acting out your faith, even as Jesus acted out his death and resurrection on the night before he died.

"You should know what you are doing when you stand and move, therefore. By your action, you are expressing your faith in God’s intervention in our world and its history: you are testifying that Jesus Christ is the source and summit of all things. By your action, you are expressing your faith in the Real Presence: you are testifying that the bread and wine are changed substantially into the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ.

"By your action," he said, "you are expressing your faith in the Church to whom the Eucharist belongs: you are testifying that the one Bread from Heaven and the one Cup of Salvation make us one, make the Church, the assembly of the redeemed. By your action, you are expressing your faith in the ordained priesthood: you are testifying that the priest acts in persona Christi Capitis, that he gives the substance of who he is as a kind of medium for the coming of the substance of Christ. By your action, you are expressing your faith in the life of the Church as it has come down to us, and as it is extended in our day: you are testifying that you accept what the Church teaches and that you accept what the Church does in all her sacraments.

"If you stop to reflect on what you are doing, soberly and seriously, you will have to see that you are saying all these things. You are saying them in public each time you come forth for Communion. You are expressing outwardly, in your bodies, what you hold inwardly in your hearts. You are acting out, if you will, what you believe.

"As we close this year," Bishop Gilmore added, "I have one request to make of you, one challenge to set before you: don’t lie, don’t ever lie. Don’t lie in this church, in your church at home. Don’t lie in the Communion line, this one here or that one there. Don’t say in bodily form what you don’t believe. Don’t pretend belief where there is none. Don’t act out a faith you do not have. Or, if you sometimes do, repent, confess, make amends, and start over.

"When I say don’t lie, I mean let an authentic faith, full and rounded, inform all your lives, deeply and in all truth. The Lord Jesus knew you and loved you before you were conceived. The Lord Jesus called you from the womb. The Lord Jesus sent you into the world to live his Gospel. Don’t let him down by saying with your actions something you don’t believe. Consistency is the request I make of you today. Consistency is the challenge I set before you today. Consistency, consistency, consistency.

"If we knew what we were doing when we stand, and move, and receive, if our reception of Communion today is an authentic expression of our deeply-held faith," Bishop Gilmore said, "we shall have recovered the sense of wonder Pope John Paul desired when he gave us this Year of the Eucharist. May the holy pope help it to be so."

Al concluir este año de la Eucaristía, podría ayudamos reflexionar sobre un hecho muy simple: recibir la Eucaristía es un acto público de Fe. Cuando se acercan para comulgar, están mostrando físicamente, con sus actos, lo que confiesan creer mentalmente. Sus pies hacen este acto de fe. Sus piemas lo hacen. Su torso lo hace. Sus manos lo hacen. Su lengua lo hace. Todo lo que son ustedes hace un acto de fe, y sucede ahí afuera, en un sitio público, para que todos lo vean. Están manifestando su fe, en la forma como Jesús manifestó su muerte y resurrección, la noche antes de morir .

Por esto, deberian tomar conciencia de lo que hacen, cuando se ponen de pie y se mueven. Con su acción, están expresando su fe en la intervención de Dios en nuestro mundo y su historia: están testificando que Jesucristo es la fuente y la expresión máxima de todas las cosas. Con su acción, están expresando su fe en la Presencia Real: están dando testimonio de que el pan y el vino han sido transformados sustancialmente, en el cuerpo, sangre, alma y divinidad de Jesucristo.

Con su acción están expresando su fe en la Iglesia, a quien pertenece la Eucaristía: están testificando que el Pan Unico del Cielo, y la Copa Unica de Salvación, nos hacen uno, hacen la Iglesia, la asamblea de los redimidos. Con su acción, están expresando su fe en el sacerdocio ordenado: están testificando que el sacerdote actúa en lugar de Crista Cabeza, que él da de lo que es su sustancia, como especie de medio, para que llegue la sustancia de Cristo. Con su acción, están expresando su fe en la vida de la Iglesia como nos ha sido trasmitida, como se ha extendido hasta nuestros dias: están testificando que aceptan lo que la Iglesia enseñia, y que aceptan lo que la Iglesia hace en todos sus sacramentos.

Si se detienen a reflexionar, mesurada y seriamente, en lo que están haciendo tendrán, que ver que estan diciendo todas estas cosas. Las están diciendo en público cada vez que se acercan a la Comunión. Están expresando, al exterior, con su cuerpo, lo que mantienen intemamente en su corazón. Están poniendo en escena, valga la expresión, lo que creen.

Al cerrar este añio, tengo algo que pedirles, un reto que poner ante ustedes: no digan mentiras, nunca digan una mentira. No mientan en esta iglesia, a en su iglesia en casa. No mientan al hacer fila para la Communion, ésta aqui, o ésa allá. No digan en forma corporal lo que no creen. No pretendan un contenido que no existe. No representen una fe que no tienen. O, si alguna vez lo hacen, arrepiéntanse, confiésenlo, hagan enmiendas, y comiencen de nuevo.

Cuando digo que no mientan, quiero decir que permitan que una auténtica fe, cornpleta y acabada, dé forma a sus vidas todas, profundarnente, yen plena verdad. El Señor Jesús los conoció y los amó antes de ser concebidos. El Señor Jesús los llamó desde el seno matemo. El Señor Jesús los envió al rnundo para vivir su Evangelio. No lo hagan quedar mal diciendo con sus acciones algo en lo que no creen. Lo que hoy les pido es consistencia. Consistencia es el reto que pongo hoy ante ustedes. Consistencia, consistencia, consistencia.

Si supiérarnos lo que estarnos haciendo cuando nos ponernos de pie, nos movernos, y recibirnos, si nuestra recepción de la Communión es hoy una auténtica expresión de nuestra fe más profunda, habrernos recuperado el sentido de asombro que el Papa Juan Pablo deseaba cuando nos dio el año de la Eucaristía. Que el Santo Papa nos ayude a que sea así.
