‘Oh, Holy Cow!’ Bovine Bingo?
St. Dominic School hosts unusual fund raising event
While cows at the Finney County Fairgrounds may not seem unusual, people eagerly awaiting the cows’ dropping a patty on a numbered square might seem a bit strange. This is bingo, with a twist. A cow patty on your numbered square means a chance at a $2,000 grand prize.
Cow Patty Bingo in the rodeo arena makes up part of "Oh, Holy Cow!", a fundraising auction at 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15 in the 3I Building in Garden City. Proceeds from bingo, a barbecue dinner and the auction will benefit the St. Dominic School renovation project.
Two cows on loan from Irsik & Doll Feed Yard, will consume generous portions of alfalfa then roam the rodeo arena, which is marked to resemble a gigantic bingo card. Bingo squares belong to individuals who have purchased the spots for $20.
"If a cow ‘gets your number’, you win your $20 back, and we put your name in a drawing for a $2,000 cash prize," said Shelly Batman, Oh, Holy Cow! chairperson.
Inside the 3I Building, live and silent auctions, live entertainment, and food and drink will occupy participants as they wait for the results of Cow Patty Bingo.
The event is open to the public. Dinner and bingo tickets, $15 and $20 respectively, are available at Neuman Chiropractic, Linenberger Jewelry, The Good Sport and St. Dominic School (620-276-8981).
The St. Dominic School Renovation project will provide additional classrooms and meeting space. Almost complete, the classroom and meeting space occupies a former rectory that in the 1960’s housed Dominican sisters who taught at St. Dominic School. Eventually the rectory housed the parish priests, and then was converted to parish offices. Parish staff members are temporarily working out of the renovated area. They will relocate next spring to St. Dominic Parish Center, which is currently under construction.
