Three Dominican Sisters of Great Bend mourned

Sister Joan Forward

GREAT BEND - Sister Joan Forward, 92, died Sept. 26, 2006, at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend.

She was born Oct. 8, 1913, in Clearwater, as Margaret Forward, the daughter of Edward and Johanna Dugan Forward. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community in 1928, and took her first vows in 1931. She taught first through eighth grades in parochial schools in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska, and was principal of eight different schools. She worked as an office assistant part time at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, after retirement.

She has no surviving brothers or sisters.

Burial was in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery.

Sister Miriam Schremmer

GREAT BEND - Sister Miriam Schremmer, 94, died Sept. 28, 2006, at the Dominican Sisters Convent Infirmary, Great Bend.

She was born Mary Theresa Schremmer, Aug. 29, 1912, in Beaver, the daughter of Alois and Caroline Frenzel Schremmer. A sister in the Dominican Sisters Community since July 16, 1927, she was a teacher in Garden Plain from 1937 to 1988, worked in the health field as a nurse, head nurse, floor supervisor, and eventually was an administrator of St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Larned, St. Rose Hospital now known as Central Kansas Medical Center, at Great Bend, in the pastoral care department. She served as the director of the Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend for six years. She assumed directorship of the Dominican Sisters International Rosary Shrine, until retiring in 1998.

Survivors include: two brothers, John, Gorham, and Oswald, Hoisington; and a sister, Loretta Ann Maixner, Hutchinson.

Father Robert Schremmer presided. She was buried at the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery.

Sister Veronica Staudinger

GREAT BEND - Sister Veronica Staudinger, 96, died Sept. 25, 2006, at Dominican Sisters’ Convent infirmary, Great Bend.

She was born June 11, 1910, in Dubuque, as Theresa Odillia Staudinger, the daughter of John and Veronica Woydziak Staudinger. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community in 1924 and took her vows in 1928. She worked for 52 years as a teacher and/or principal at Catholic elementary schools. She taught at 16 Kansas schools and three Missouri schools. She also was a part-time secretary and librarian for two years at St. Rose School, Great Bend.

She was preceded in death by all her brothers and sisters, the Rev. Joseph OSB, Adolph, Anton, Henry, Carl, Sister Monica and Helen Malone.

Father Reginald Urban presided. She was buried at the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery.
