Students in grades 6-8 from across the diocese were treated to a day of celebration and praise Oct. 8 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the annual Junior High Youth Rally.

Under the theme, "Credo" (We believe), more than 200 students celebrated Mass, enjoyed a keynote address by Anthony Keiser, and broke out into smaller groups for sessions run by the youth council.

It was one of the largest attended youth gatherings to date in the diocese. In his column, Director of Youth Ministries Steven Polley wrote, "As we gathered prior to the 10 a.m. Mass at the cathedral, I realized that it was going to be a very special day. As Mass began, what an awesome feeling it was to see more than 200 young people and their adult sponsors gathered in one area to celebrate Liturgy with the parishioners of the cathedral."

Following Mass, Keiser led a spirited game of "Simon Says," after which he asked all 200 plus youth to come forward. Standing on a folding chair and looking over the youth, Keiser asked a series of questions requiring one of two answers.

"Do you prefer chocolate or vanilla ice cream?" he asked. He then had the youth separate into the chocolate group, and the vanilla group. He brought them back together and, after several more questions, asked, "Do you believe God exists, or do you believe in God?

"There’s a big difference between believing, and believing in. When you believe something, you acknowledge it’s true. Believing in demands action, doing something. When you believe in something, it involves every aspect of your life."

The participants then separated into smaller groups for sessions presented by the diocesan youth council.

One group enjoyed a game of Price is Right, designed to teach the youth about self-worth. "Healthy self-esteem is believing in yourself," one council member told the younger youth.

Participants also enjoyed lunch together, and listened to talks presented by other youth.
