There is an inspired line I wish to write on your hearts this afternoon. It is this from Psalm 87: In you all find their home .

The psalm is a hymn to old Jerusalem: God's dwelling, the holy city, to which all the peoples come from afar, their home.

But I want you to understand that finding in terms of the Guadalupe event. La Morenita asked for a hermitage (a shelter for the homeless), for a home (a place of affectionate relationships), for a temple (a place where the sacred dwells). All of this resonated with those who had been made homeless by the Conquest ten years earlier.

It should resonate with you Spanish-speaking people as well. You have also been displaced, been made homeless, been marginalized. Immigration itself has done that to you. But look around you today and understand the Virgin' s promise today: in you (this hermitage, this house, this temple) we find our home.

All the elements of this dedication-ritual reflect that. The water with its implication of Baptism, of being plunged into the death of Christ; the altar, symbol of Christ, with its implication of the stone rejected by the builders; the oil with its implication of consecrating, healing, and protecting; the incense with its implication of religious awe

and prayer; the light with its implication of the Risen-Christ dispelling all our darkness ... all these speak of the change that permits us to find here our home.

And, above all, there is the bread, there is the wine. When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. ( I Corinthians 11 : 26) Because the loaf of bread is one, we though many are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf ( I Corinthians 10: 17) Sharers in the one bread and the one cup, we are the one body of Christ, and we are the body of one another. As Paul also put it: We, though many, are one body in Christ and individually members one of another. (Romans 12:5)

So look around you today. Contemplate this place today, the place of this altar, the place of this sacrifice, the place of this communion. In this place, in you all find their home. May that profound truth be sewn into the hollow of your mantle today.

Thank you, priests and people of St. Anthony Church: priests and people of the past, so many of whom are here today, and priests and people of the present, who carried this dream through to its magnificent completion. You give splendid witness to all the diocese. You tell us that a new mestizaje can take place, is, in fact, now taking place. What you are sacramentally around this table of the Lord, you are becoming day by day in the streets, in the plants, and in the homes of this town. You are showing us how it is done. You are a sign of hope for us all.

Hay una linea inspirada que quisiera escribir en sus corazones esta tarde. Es del Salmo 87 (ochenta y siete): En ti todos encuenfran su casa.

El salmo es un himno a la antigua Jerusalen: la morada de Dios, la ciudad santa, a la que todas las gentes vienen desde lejos, su casa.

Sin embargo, quisiera que entendieran ustedes este hallazgo en terminos del acontecilliento de Guadalupe. La Morenita pidio una ermita (refugio para los sin casa), pidio una casa (sitio de relaciones afectuosas), pidio un templo (lugar donde habita la divinidad). Todo esto resono en quienes habian sido convertidos en sin casa por los Conquistadores diez alios antes.

Deberia re sonar en ustedes tambien, de habla hispana. Ustedes tallbien han sido desalojados, convertidos en sin casa, marginados. La inmigracion misma les ha hecho esto. Pero vean a su rededor hoy, entiendan hoy la promesa de la Virgen: en ti (esta ermita, esta casa, este teroplo) encontramos nuestra casa.

Deberia resonar en ustedes, de habla inglesa, tambien. Ustedes igualmente han sido desalojados, convertidos en sin casa, marginados. La inmigracion con sus enormes nUmeros les ha hecho esto. Pero miren en su rededor hoy, y entiendan la promesa de la Virgen hoy: en ti ( este suelio de tantos alios) encontramos nuestra casa.

Todos los elementos de este rito de Dedicacion reflejan esto. El agua, con su iroplicacion en el Bautismo, en el ser sumergidos en la muerte de Cristo; el altar, sillbolo de Cristo, con su iroplicaci6n en la piedra rechazada por los constructores; el aceite con su implicacion en consagrar, curar, y proteger; el incienso con su implicacion en el asombro religioso y la oracion; la luz con su implicacion en el Cristo Resucitado que disipa nuestra oscuridad ...todo esto habla del cambio que nos permite encontrar aqui nuestra casa.

Y, sobre todo, est.:i el pan, yest.:i el vino. Cuando comemos este pan, y bebemos de este cilliz, proclamamos la muerte del Senor hasta que vuelva. (1 Cor 11, 26) Puesto que uno es el pan, aunque muchos somos un cuerpo, porque todos participamos de un solo pan. (1 Cor 10, 17) Participantes en un solo pan yen un solo caliz, somos el unico cuerpo de Cristo, y somos el cuerpo unos de otros. Como Pablo tambien lo expreso: Nosotros, aunque muchos, somos un cuerpo en Cristo, e individualmente miembros unos de ofros. (Rom 12, 5)

Asi pues, vean a su rededor hoy. Conteroplen este sitio hoy, el sitio de este altar, el sitio de este sacrificio. el sitio de esta communion. En este sitio, todos ustedes encuentran su casa. Ojala esta profunda verdad quede sembrada en los pliegues de su manto hoy.

Gracias, sacerdotes y fieles de la iglesia de San Antonio: sacerdotes y fieles de ayer, muchos de los cuales estan aqui hoy, sacerdotes y fieles del presente, que llevaron a magnifico termino este sueno. Dan ustedes esplendido testimonio a toda la di6cesis. Nos dicen que un nuevo mestizaje puede realizarse, que, en realidad, esta sucediendo. Lo que ustedes son sacramentalmente en tomo a esta mesa del Senor, lo estan siendo dia tras dia en las calles, en las plantas, yen las casas de esta ciudad. Nos estan mostrando ustedes como se hace. Son ustedes signo de esperanza para todos nosotros.
