Msgr. Brian Moor: 20 years serving God's people

Msgr. Brian R. Moore has worn many hats during his 20 years as a priest, most of which, it seems, he’s wearing right now.

Although only recently arrived to the Diocese of Dodge City, he currently serves as Director of the Pastoral Ministry Program, Director of Clergy Continuing Education, Director of Seminarians, Interim Director of Vocations, Diocesan Liturgist, and parochial vicar at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

But Msgr. Moore is used to juggling tasks. Prior to serving in Dodge City, he was on the faculty at Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio from 1988 to 2003, where he served the School of Theology as academic dean, vice rector, and associate professor. He also served as personal formation director, and as a spiritual director.

Prior to his ordination, Msgr. Moore was an assistant professor of theology at St. Mary of the Plains College from 1976 to 1980. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Josephinum Seminary in 1983, and was ordained by Bishop Stanley G. Schlarman on Oct. 15 of the same year.

"I was assigned to St. Rose [in Great Bend] five days after I was ordained," Msgr. Moore said. "They were a live, vibrant, Catholic community. The greatest joy was the Sunday Masses. I was impressed with the way the parish used the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

"I learned to be a priest with those people."

Msgr. Moore, who was born in Los Angeles, had long thought about becoming a priest, but it wasn’t until 1979 when looking into the permanent diaconate program that he began to more closely examine the idea.

"I thought about becoming a permanent deacon, but I wanted to say Mass and hear confessions. And you can only do that in the priesthood."

Four years later, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dodge City and with his mother and two sisters in attendance, he became "Father Moore," and a very busy one at that.
