Bishop tells couples at Anniversary Mass: 'You are a gift to the Church in southwest Kansas'

Bishop Gilmore greets the longest married Catholic couple in the diocese, Art and Bertha Fischer of Pratt, married 67 years.

More than 100 couples from throughout the diocese renewed their wedding vows at the annual Anniversary Mass, Oct. 21 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Referring to the Gospel reading in which Jesus asks, "When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore told those gathered, "...You are my reason for thinking he will." "Your lived experience helps us understand how the bride -- the Church -- gives herself to the groom -- Christ. It helps us understand that unbreakable bond between them. "Will he find faith on earth? ... He will because you are here ... because your love is here. He will because you have kept your word all these years." On behalf of himself and the priests of the diocese, Bishop Gilmore thanked the couples and told them, "You are a many faceted gift to the Church of southwest Kansas." Following the Mass, all were invited to a roast beef dinner in the social hall. There, Bishop Gilmore congratulated all the couples, and personally presented certificates to all couples married more than 60 years. All those celebrating anniversaries were given a certificate later in the evening. The longest married couple in the diocese is Art and Bertha Fischer of Pratt, married 67 years.
