The kick-off for the Environment for Learning Fund at Sacred Heart Cathedral School was held Oct. 15. Students and staff gathered to learn about the purpose of the campaign and its impact on their lives. Father Ted Skalsky explained that the Environment for Learning campaign would address three issues: security, a state of the art electrical system for computers, lights and air conditioning, and a new roof. "When the weather is extremely hot, the doors and windows of the school are opened to allow ventilation into the building," stated Father Ted. "On just such a day (last year) an unknown individual entered the school and made his way to the second floor. Teachers gathered students in the corners of their classrooms while police apprehended the intruder. "A comfortable learning environment is desirable, but a secure and safe environment is absolutely critical for our children. The installation of an air conditioning system will eliminate the need to leave windows and doors wide open during school hours." Father Ted went on to explain that the 1954 electrical system in the school was not designed for computers and air conditioning. He stated that the students needed an updated electrical system in today’s technological classrooms. He further stated that it would be irresponsible to renovate in areas of need without addressing the school’s leaking roof. Sacred Heart Cathedral School is on the National Register of Historic Places which makes it eligible for the Kansas State Rehabilitation Tax credit program. This program was designed to provide assistance for the rehabilitation of historic buildings in Kansas. In announcing the $620,000 campaign goal, Father Ted also stated that $300,000 has already been raised. The balance needed will be solicited by campaign committees. Father Ted noted the school’s impact on the community. The school has 312 students and a faculty and staff of 32. The financial impact is over $1,500,000 annually. "There is no doubt that Sacred Heart School has kept USD 443 from having to construct even more schools, which would only result in increasing the tax burden on property owners," he stated. "We are providing a service for the whole community. We want you (students) to have a good environment so you can learn." The project leadership includes: honorary chairman, Loren Doll; general chairmen: Pat George, Derrick Harding, Bob Dellinger, Justin Banning, and Debby Slattery; campaign coordinator, Jodi Lix; public relations, Diana Meadows. |
