The 'Happy Knot-Tiers' sew for Catholic schools

Elizabeth Beller and Florence Hines of the "Happy-Knot Tiers" quilting club of Spearville, present Bishop Ronald Gilmore with eight quilts, one of which will be distributed to each Catholic school in the diocese to be placed up for raffle. The group of 15 quilters meets each Wednesday at the St. John Parish Center in Spearville. The first group of six quilters first got togethe some 30 years ago to sort clothes for a clothing drive. Torn or damaged clothes were put into another pile and eventually were used for quilt squares. Some quilts are sold to help purchase quilting supplies or items for the parish center, and some are donated. A few years ago, the group donated 60 quilts to Youthville. Over the years they have pieced together approximately 700 quilts. Besides Beller and Hines, current members include Marie Burke, Marion Schinstock, Delphine Peintner, Joan Temaat, Mary Norma Schulte, Bernice Mages, Darlene Gleason, Edith Mae Giessel, Betty Simmons, Shirley Stein, Reba Kolbeck, Marceda Schmidt, and Sally Slattery.
