They’ve been coming all day, every
day for more than seven and a half years, devout Catholics — and
occasionally those of other denominations — intent on honoring their Lord
and Savior in perpetual adoration in the chapel at St. Catherine Hospital
in Garden City.
For a group of Garden City youth, adoration has become
more than a time of quiet reflection and prayer. Each Saturday night, when
most people their age are celebrating the weekend, they have made the
chapel their refuge, celebrating instead the presence of Christ in the
Holy Eucharist through lilting guitar, scripture reading, and, yes, plenty
of quiet reflection and prayer.
There they offer personal prayers, they pray for world
peace, and they pray for an end to abortion.
José Martinez formed the Saturday night devotion three
years ago. He was attracted, he said, to the chapel’s tranquility — a
dimly lit room, soft guitar and whispered prayers offering an ideal place
to feel God’s presence.
"He is all over the place, but He’s more here,"
Martinez told the Garden City Telegram. "It’s a special place to
adore Him because it’s so serene."
Nearly 300 people, including 215 families, participate
at some point throughout the week in the 24-hour-a-day adoration at the
chapel, thanks in part to the hospital’s security carefully allowing the
chapel’s doors to always stay unlocked.
Lorenzo Rincon, 27, has been attending adoration for
four years.
"I have been coming here … because this is the only
place where I can find the peace I cannot find anywhere else," he said. "I
also come to pray for the young people around the world who do not know
the Lord."
Elizabeth Guevara, 22, said, "This is the place where I
talk directly to God; I can meditate without interruptions. This is the
place where I feel God so close to me that I can tell Him my feelings and
I can also hear His voice."
Perpetual Adoration began at St. Catherine Hospital
Oct. 4, 1996. Numbers of adorers have been much higher in past years, and
there is always room for additional people to come to the chapel at any
time of day or night. Father Joseph Bahr, pastor of St. Dominic Church,
serves as advisor.
"My experiences with perpetual adoration have been
something beautiful," said Genaro Espino, 26. "God the Father is present
in the flesh. When I am there, I give Him my fears, worries and failures
of the week. I also give Him thanks for good health and everything else He
gives me. What I feel inside of me when I praise Him with music is too
great to describe with words."

"I have been an
adorerer for four years. I got started going to retreats (Arco Iris and
Cursillos) at Saint Mary Church. Adoration has allowed me to feel God’s
presence in my life. He has helped me to be a better person with my family
and in society."

"I come to this
place to adore because it is where I truly feel Christ’s presence. So many
times in His presence, I feel closer to Him and He is always with me."
"My visits to
the chapel make me feel comforted. Sometimes I come carrying problems and
pressures. I open my heart to the Lord and He truly listens. I immediately
feel relief; that is the reason why I have been visiting and adoring for
three years and I hope to adore forever."
