Special to the Register

The boys and girls "A" and "B" basketball teams from Sacred Heart Cathedral School in Dodge City marked a historic end to their season.

It was the first time in the school’s history that all four teams swept the final tournament.

The "A" girls team finished their season at Healy in the WKSL tournament. Their 13-2 record earned them a number one seed in the tournament. With a first round bye, the girls won two straight games to go on and win the A team championship. They played Utica/Healy and won 24-30 in the final game. They ended their season with a record of 15-2.

The girls "B" team had a record of 15-1, earning them a number two seed in the tournament. The B team won two straight games to win the B team championship. They played the number one seed Utica/Healy in the finals and won 30-3. They ended their season with a record of 17-1.

The "B" boys basketball team finished their season Feb. 12 at the WKSL tournament. The B team’s regular season record was 10-4, earning them a number two spot at the tournament. The B team won three straight games to win the B team championship. The B team competed against LaCrosse in the finals of the tournament. The "A" team boys basketball season came to an end with a record of 13-6, taking first place in the league tournament, and second place in the league season.

According to boys coach Alan Burcher, the team used "prayer, hard work, determination, goal setting, and a burning desire" to achieve their final record. Speaking of the boys "A" team, Burcher said, "The team-work and willingness to try new plays and develop new skills allowed the team to peak at the end of the season. It was rewarding and exciting to see the players mature and become successful in many parts of the game that they had not previously been accustomed to.

"The character that we showed as a team was more important when we lost and how the players responded to it. This is where you learn to work on your weakness and strive to push towards your goals. The boys fought hard and were rewarded in the end by taking the tournament and feeling the joy of the victory that it brings."

Coach Burcher wished to add this note of thanks:

"As athletic director, I would like to thank all parents this year on all teams for their help and support of the program. We are fortunate in that parents are willing to drive and help others get to the events. I would like to thank the coaches of all teams for their hard work and commitment. Cougar Club and all the teachers, bookkeepers, announcers, and stats people, and managers who helped out through the season are also owed gratitude. A special thanks to those who took the time to drive the bus or the van when needed. Finally, to the students themselves: I have always said that five years from now you won’t remember your season record, but you can take great pride in knowing that you are the only teams that went a perfect 4 and 0 record in the final tournament. That event you should remember forever. First place is hard to beat."
